Case of Emergency

We all have heard (and hence ignore) the instructions for an emergency in our schools, workplaces, and even our favorite stores. It is usually ended with “Break Glass” and there is either an emergency PANIC button, or a fire alarm, or some other type of self explanatory instruction. However the new millennium has brought with it a new hazard. FEAR. Since 9-11, our society has been bombarded with ‘news’ of frightening events in our country. Events that range from terror plots in our nations cities, to executions of children in our schools. The former only concerns most citizens in passing, since it usually only indirectly effects the majority, but the latter strikes fear into the hearts of millions as we contemplate the REALITY of someone entering a school full of children, and being so enraged, so far away from reality, that they would actually execute helpless, innocent children.
The Fear-Mongering that has taken over our country, and even our world, seems to only be the beginning. What has ended is our ability to get through even one day of our lives without the question of our safety entering our heads. As I write this, it is about 8pm on a Saturday night. It is dark, and the Harvest Moon (12% larger than normal)is slowly making its progression across the night sky. My dog is barking. He has been barking for half an hour now. My first thought? Who’s outside??? Well, honestly, no one should be outside. We live in the country. No sidewalks, no next door neighbors. My first thought should have been: What is outside? Usually the dog barks at groundhogs, which seem to love the fact that they can irritate him, but he can't get near them.
As I listen to the barking, I also notice the traffic on the road. About a mile down the road is a very popular bar. My husband's best-friend's band is playing there tonight. I am not considering the band, or the bar tonight. No, tonight I am worried about the patrons. I worry that at 2:15 am when the bar sends everyone home, someone will be drunk and miss the curve in road in front of my house, or not notice the red flashing lights of the trains that come through all night.
As I think forward to bedtime, I remind myself to double check that I locked the doors. I have never locked my doors before, and more often than not, I only remember after I’m in bed. I usually convince myself that there is no reason to lock my doors. That I am perfectly safe out here in the country. Tonight I will think of the dead Amish children who had more reason than most children to believe they were safe. I’ll probably climb out of my warm bed and go lock the doors.
As more horrifyingly evil things happen around us, what will we do in case of emergency? We can see what our government will do – lock the barn door after the horse is gone, create more rules which only apply to those who are not suspect (reverse profiling), or do like Rep. Frank Lasee (R Wis) and suggest that we put guns into our schools. Obviously a ridiculous suggestion only meant to spark anger, and outrage so that they can pass some "kinder, gentler" law that subsequently limits or inhibits parental involvement in our schools.
What can WE do to help ensure our safety and the safety of our loved ones? Well, pretty much nothing. We will talk about it for awhile, then the next big FEAR will come along and we’ll worry on that for a few weeks. We humans are basically apathetic creatures who have the uncanny ability to ‘forget’ about important things while we go about our oh-so-busy and important lives. My daughter says “Mom, I am worried about what the future will bring”, and I answer, “Our great grandparents had the same worries and concerns during their time. Put it into perspective, and you wont get so upset.”
But, is that the right thing to do? Am I teaching my children to be as apathetic as I am? Shame on me. I should say, “ Make a list of your Top 3 biggest Fears. Now, for each one, make a list of things you can do to keep them from happening, and make a list of what you would do if they happened anyway.” THAT would be doing something.
Well, Here’s MY LIST. Maybe our intelligent, creative, and informed group can make a difference.
BIGGEST FEARS
1. Our government will continue on its mission to strip our citizens of their rights, thereby paving the way for:
A) a totalitarian state, or
B) a union with other less-freedom-loving countries
(apparently under way and due to be complete in 2007)
2. Our government will force our schools into lockdown with
prison-like searches of all visitors and staff in a knee-jerk
reaction to the latest round of school shootings.
(funny how these things happen in 3’s, eh Jas?)
3. Armageddon or the Rapture will occur in my lifetime and I’ll
live through it. Then what?!?!
So, there it is. What can we do? How can we prevent or fix any of it? Dare we try?

Great blog, very timely. I personally am very sick of the fear industry and boy, do we have one. Not even C2C was an escape from fear mongering as long as the suitcase nuke crowd could rile us all up that some guy with a carry on sized bag with an a-bomb was going to blow us all up.
It isn't just there. Not many places you can leave your door open to your house anymore because you never know what kind of a psycho is coming to your place today as portrayed by your local news media. Worse, sometimes it really does happen. But for the rest of the time, TPTB paint a picture of life in which we have to be on guard every microsecond of our lives and wear us down so that we give up our rights for a false sense of safety.
About the carrier groups: Surely, the Democrats know they're over there? What blows my mind is that the United States has practically stripped itself completely of the kind of industry it used to take to wage war on multiple fronts and then initiate wars on multiple fronts. This is national suicide. It's one thing to defend yourself, but this goes without saying is insane. Who is left in Congress to stop the madness? Anyone?.......
When I think of the history of the carrier Enterprise in World War II fighting because it had no choice to defend America from genuine aggression, it makes me doubly sad as an American and a Star Trek fan to see her namesake being pressed into these illegal bullshit and bushshit wars instead of retrieving space capsules as I remember it doing as a child.
I was listening to two NPR programmes one was called The World and the other Open Source. Interestingly, they both were painting a picture of the Republicans rapidly losing their grip on power and an American people incredibly fed up with it. A person interviewed on the world representing some thinktank blasted Bush for his failed Iraq policy leading directly to the mess in NK and the sideshow insanity of Iran. The Open Source topic was about Ohio. From the sound of it, it would take some over the top Diebolding for the Republicans to win there.
But you know, I am so distrustful of mainstream media including NPR, that I don't know what to make of all this. Does someone finally smell blood in the water? Is the only reason the Democrats have a chance is because the Republicans screwed up even worse? The Dems didn't need to look for their lost backbones because Bush and Co. totally implode on their own?
And what does that get us?

I see your point regarding the Dems. I have also wondered this...like, in 4 years are we gonna be wishing for the "good old Bush Days?" Perish the thought, I know. But I can remember when Clinton was degrading the Office of President by getting blown in the Oval Office, thinking the only good democrat was a dead one...

At election time I used to vote by who I felt was the lesser of two evils. This year its going to be a choice between the spineless and the soulless. Do any politicians really have a soul? Ion? Uni?
I am fed up with the government and our schools (two sides of the same box) telling me what I can and cannot do, what I should and should not do, and no matter what I do, its wrong. Have you ever had to do a parent teacher conference with an experienced K-3 grade teacher? Talk about intimidating! By the time they get done with you, all you can do is suck your thumb and eat glue. (No offense to any teachers out there, but you know its true)
Our kids are taught how to take proficiency tests, yet the schools get extra money for the kids who do poorly AS WELL AS the kids who do well. The poor kids who are average just dont count. No Kudos, No Title I funds.
OH Heres another one, which congressional idiots are the ones that think that if they take cakes and candies out of our schools that the kids wont be fat? What a load of hogwash! Our kids are obese because the cost of meat is 10x higher than the cost of carbohydrate foods. Nobody can afford to feed a family of 4 or 6 healthy lean cuts of meat and vegies. Besides the cost, most kids arent allowed to go outside and play due to the FEAR of the 'bad' things that can happen, so they watch TV and play expensive video games. I bet if you went into the worst neighborhoods in your city, the poor kids all have game boys and xbox's.

the other day in my son's daily take home folder i was irritated to find that the weekly news letter was less "news" as it was Parenting No NO's. I was outraged.
I felt like i was reading a list of Can't Do's in the elevator of a Palm Beach Condo.
I felt like I was the worst parent in the world because i had ONCE, just ONCE thrown in a (gasp!) homemade browine for him to have at snack.
My son is in NO WAY even close to fat. Infact the ped. had suggested adding calories to his diet (hence the homemade brownies) and I am publicly chastised basicly in a school news letter. "These kinds of snacks are inappropriate and greatly discouraged."
Ok, shoot me. here, kid...have some grapes. SHEESH
EXACTLY! My elementary kids are in grades 3,4,&5. By the time my youngest has gotten to a teacher, her twin brother have had her for two years and she is generally wore down and tired. At least in the new school district, they are having less problems and are enjoying school.
Heres a funny school kid memory: My oldest was in second grade when I was pregnant with my last child. I clearly remember one day in particular that she came home from school upset and crying. When she finally calmed down long enough to tell me what was wrong she said "My teacher is pregnant too. There is nowhere for me to hide." Out of the mouths of babes!

Thanks for the new post KB4K. I think it's sad that only TPTB have any influence over our kids other than their own peer pressure. Much of what is taught now is corporate diatribe. They have no interest in a child's nutrition whatsoever. If they did, they would teach gardening from k to 12. Let me know if you ever hear of an educational system that teaches kids to young adults how to be self sufficient.
My remarkable experience today was with a romaine plant. If you've ever seen a romaine seed you might recall how similar it is to grass seed but amazingly smaller. We are talkiing tiny here. The romaine stalk is as thick as rhubarb and 2-3 feet high before it puts out it's little yellow flowers in abundance. The flowers turn to dandelion type fluff balls and when you roll the tiny pod of fluff, the seeds sort of explode out of the pod and into your collection. You basically just "touch" the little pod of fluff and if the seeds are mature they blow right out. There may be as many as 25-30 seeds in each pod but it would take 30 pods of 20 seeds to cover a penny.
One of the members in the community garden where I practice my dark art allowed me to thin out her strawberries and transplant the first year runners into my plot. Strawberries are extremely resilient to cold and will start putting out green leaves and runners early in April. I covered all the new ones with fall leaves and hopefully the plants will grow above the cover and the berries will grow on the mulch instead of on the ground. That keeps them clean and prevents rot and bugs from getting at them.
As far as locking down, all I can say is that gardening is therapeutic.

Great Blog. Great Questions. I think that we are at a "No return point". There is no fix until humanity evolves and gets beyond ego - power and greed. My thoughts: get your "house" in order, pray for the best, expect the worse, and try to survive. I cannot believe what I am hearing/seeing these days, and my frustration level is at an all time high. I used to believe in the power of people, but when the people don't have the will, they don't have the power either. Sorry for the rant/depressing note. The corruption that spews out everywhere is really getting to me.

Here is an idea for energy. It may not produce more that what is put into it, but at least it does not require paying someone else for it. To be honest, it is not my idea, but has been rumored to be successful and not from anyone of the free energy group either. The story goes like this: A couple has a cabin they visit on occasion. The generator is fickle. The wife sews using a treadle sewing machine. The husband gets the extremely bright idea to hook a treadle base to some batteries and harness the power. They successfully use this to run the power in their cabin. 30 mins of 'treadleing' produces about an hour of tv and lights.
My spin on this is to use current Hand Pump plans for well water and backwards engineer for the use of a treadle sewing machine base and the pumping mechanism. These bases are extremely easy to maintain, move swiftly, and depending on the size wheel, produce 3-5 times the motion per pump. Besides, kids cant seem to get enough of just sitting and pushing the foot pedal up and down. You can also find them at many auctions (buy only the ones with terrible cabinets and such since there are still alot of people who buy them to use them as sewing machines, and we wouldnt want to drive up the market on such a usefull peice of equipment. Generally $10 for a machine in poor repair.
There. An energy idea, with vague plans, and an application to go with it.

When God killed the first-born of the Egyptians, the Israelites in effect became indebted to him for that. Remember the law of restitution? Life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. So all the first-born whether animal or man, belong to God after that. It doesn't mean they have to be sacraficed, but the parent has to pay a tax at the temple to redeem them. The animals can be redeemed or given to the priests. It gets more complicated on the options for redemption, but that is the general gist of it. That's why they took Jesus to the temple to dedicate him to God, because he was the first-born male. If I'm not mistaken the law only applies to first-born male children.
V..You may recall that Reed is perplexed by the inclusion of the old testament and the new testament into one book. It is obvious that Jesus was "sent" to evolve the law when you consider the entire chapter and try to perceive these "rules of conduct" as having come down from God. I can't imagine Jesus forcing a thief into slavery for the inability of the thief to pay the tribute.
The KJV version of the same verse is considerably softer and prolly serves to make it more tolerable from a "Christian" point of view.

During the time of the Exodus you may remember that before they got to the land promised them, God gave Moses instructions about dividing up the land. All the tribes received an alotted place to settle, except the Levites. God said the only inheritance they received was God. They also were given a portion of the sacrafices to feed themselves. They were also given certain cities to live in but that's all. Here's the interesting part.
Numbers 3:31-50.
Moses was ordered to take a census of all the first born males over a month old. The total was 22,273.He did the same with the Levites. They totaled 22,000. Then God ordered that Moses take the Levites as redemption for the first born of the people. (God had called the Levites set apart for his service earlier.) But the Levites were 273 people short. So God ordered Moses to collect 5 shekels for each of the 273 people and give it to Aaron in payment.
This all happened while they were still wandering in the wilderness.

Further on in the Bible at the time of the exile God is adamant that he never had or would ask human sacrafice. The other people of the land did that and he found it abominable. He references people who worship Molech as burning thier children.
I have posted the google search for "fshod" in the past and will (bear with me here) post it again circa 2006 for the sake of posterity. The point that I'm making here is that the links which seem to suggest that they are taking the searcher to the blog, have been hijacked and in fact take you no where or to a fake site or an advertiser. Could someone explain to me how google gets the list and priortizes it. I was of the opinion that the search engine would rate the sites based on traffic so it makes me wonder why the first 10 sites listed for a non-sensical word like fshod would turn up sites with no practical reason for having traffic at all. In short, we have been hijacked by the search engine that provides this space.

I was struck by the lengths they went to to make the tabernacle so weatherproof. Did you also note the elaborate preparations to move all this equipment? I never took the time to add up all the weights given, but it was tons and tons of stuff. Most of it was carried by someone. Only certain things were allowed to be carried in the ox-carts. It reminded me a bit of watching the circus being set up and taken down and moved when I was a kid. Not that I'm comparing the two, but a major undertaking none the less.

I had and sometimes have the same thoughts about that. However if you go back to Genesis, the big sin was disobedience. The entire Old Testament is about the hard heartedness of the Jews and not obeying. The whole reason for the miracles in Egypt was to show them he would take care of them. They continually tested him even after they saw the consequences. But if you read the epistles of Paul he talks about the futility of following the law and how nobody could keep it. So that was the point. The biggest sin of the Jews in the OT was idol worship. That lead to all the out of control stuff that lead up to the exile. After that though God shows mercy once again. It certainly is a long way around for the lesson, but life was pretty brutal at that time it appears.
The NT certainly is a much more logical balance to it all and the fact that man has only to believe he is forgiven because of the act of Christ and not his own effort makes it all the more logical. I realize also that anyone who has not studied any of this or is dead set against it can find flaws or reasons it is stupid, but the whole issue comes down to faith and what you choose to believe. We have free will to do whatever we want. Regardless of what we choose to do or not do I'm sure God will continue "running his game".

I don't know how many of you have seen this one already, but there is a bit of an internet movement aiming for a beginning to an impeachment process against Shrub from the citizenry. The website is Impeach For Peace and they already have all the forms you would need to submit your own motion. Just print 'em off, fill in the blanks and mail to your appropriate representatives. I would definitely encourage all aboard to take a peek at the site and consider sending this in and getting as many people as you know to do the same. Until we, the people, make our group voice heard on this matter, for certain nothing will be done. But when we've all spoken out, then something either HAS to be done or we've effectively demonstrated to everyone just how badly the system is broken.

Off topic, I am compelled to comment on the elephant in the room that no one talks about any more. I am disappointed that the B_U/CC affair degenerated to the point where CC no longer posts (or is welcome) at FSHOD. I'm not a founding member of the BLOG (core crew) or even a frequent contributor to most discussions so I'm sure that most could care less about what I have to say, but as I said, I'm compelled to comment.
Unfortunately, not being an “insider”, I have no idea of the behind the scenes intrigue that has been going on for a year that led to the situation. I do know that B_U is abrasive and tactless. B_U’s topic of choice is Zionism. Instead of trying to educate individuals on Zionism in a constructive, mature manner, he resorted to personal insults. Thanks to Ericswan’s link. I’m REALLY starting to get a grasp on the subject. It is extensive and requires an open mind to truly get a handle it. I think B_U is highly intelligent and would have been an excellent addition to the crew, had he been able to be civil, plain and simple.
CC has a theory that B_U was just a pawn in a game that would ultimately lead to his separation from FSHOD. I won’t speculate as to whether that has merit or not. I will say that the latest chapter was blown out of proportion. The comments that were made were on CC’s own BLOG, and I think it unreasonable to crucify CC for things that were said on his BLOG, during a time that he did not have an opportunity to address the situation. I’m sure Ms. T knew she would not get a warm welcome from B_U at CC’s BLOG and she knew his mentality, so his comments should not have been a surprise. I certainly don’t condone what B_U says, but as CC has said, I do defend his right to say it, especially on CC’s BLOG. I still don’t know why CC has defended B_U so fervently, but then again, I’m not privy to the inside workings of FSHOD. Much of CC’s material goes right over my head and it has not been presented in a coherent form for me to understand. But I want to understand his material because I think it very important. Recently, CC has posted some straight-forward and understandable explanations of his work on his BLOG. I need a LOT more info and time to digest it, but I want to do it because it’s a huge piece of the puzzle. It’s certainly not the only piece, but an important one. I think the crew is better off with his input. Hopefully, at some point in time, cooler heads will prevail and CC will be back aboard FSHOD. I will continue to frequent his BLOG and will try to assimilate as much as I can from him. I will post from time to time and ask simple minded questions. Let me assure you and all here that the 'inner workings' of FSHOD should not be over-imagined. I am not really one who likes or desires intrique and politics. I really am a simple kinda guy. I eat, sleep, work and read. I do FSHOD and follow Goro's work. I'm quite boring. For all that, I was an asst. soccer coach on 2 of my daughter's teams, was an asst. Scoutmaster, was member and, for 1 year, was president of the Gulf Coast Chorale in Gulf Breeze (I like to sing in small-medium sized groups), am a ham operator (inavtive at present) but was well involved in the Amateur Radio Emergency Service in Pensacola for 10 years. I was also an avid smoker of marijuana for many of these years...but no longer. I am less a leader, rather enjoy being 2nd, or better, 3rd in command...if I accept any mantle of leadership at all...one should be a good follower, IMHO.
I can be as irreverent and in-yer-face as the next guy, but basically I believe in good manners, in being a good citizen, be it of a nation, a city, a chorale, or of an Internet community. I believe in courtesy and respect, in maybe bringing some brief moment of joy or the feeling of being 'special' to another person's life by exhibiting courtesy and respect. Holding a door for a lady, greeting an older black man, who has no doubt had to drink from the water fountain of racism, with a smile and a "Good Morning, Sir...how are you today?" ... stupid Boy Scout stuff like that...but maybe stuff like that that lightens another human's spirit, if only for a second. In fact, my early Boy Scout training remains with me today as worthy tenets, tenets that if more people followed, wouldn't this be a better world?
For sometimes coming off as pompous as I do, I am rather a humble fellow.
Unfortunately, for those who do not think as I in these basic regards (that I consider elemental in making a homo sapiens a 'human being') I have little patience and even less regard.
BU is a prime example. If I have to explain THIS to anyone who has been here any length of time...well, then we have issues. His behaviour was abhorrent. He is not a 'human being' in my thinking. The validity of any argument he may have is made less valid by the vile manner in which he conducts himself.
CC is probably more like me than not, inasmuch as he is a Dad and participates with his kids in community-related activities and such.
CC is less like me in that he comes to the defense of someone who is entirely unworthy. I, too, have sided with the 'underdog' and am more prone to do that than not, even if to my detriment. But that is only if the underdog is worthy of better treatment and/or being done a grave injustice. CC obviously thought that BU was worthy of better treatment and was being done an injustive. CC needs to develop better judgement, for BU got less punishment than he deserved.
Earlier this year, CC had stood at the bar of judgement and plead the case of BU to me. On the fact alone, that CC asked for 'mercy' on behalf of BU, I granted such. And was ill-rewarded, by the both of them. The result was this les-than-open FSHOD.
When I thought to open things back up recently, it was quickly ascertained that things were 'business as usual' with Dung Heap and back we went to members- only.
The vile manners of BU degenerated on CC's blog in which threats of a criminal nature were directed against members of this Blog, among other indignities. When complaints were registered here and at CC's blog, CC then took it upon himself to take up the defense of BU...again. And a 'vigorous', if short-lived defense it was. To my humble, Boy Scout thinking of human relations, this was the final outrage and so CC went *POOF*.
Hating to dignify him so, I admit that some days later I went to CC's late blog and was amused at the sheer effrontry of the arguments and claims that CC/BU/BL/Sybil were making against me and others at FSHOD. These 'sapiens' may delude themselves into believing anything they desire to believe...but it basically boils down to the fact that they do not have the capability to be good citizens, to be 'human beings', to behave in a generally courteous and respectful fashion within a society of people, and for that reason their society is no longer desired here by me.
Fool, do not feel bad, for I hardly understodd what CC was saying either. The number of times I asked him to 'clarify' are legion, and even when he deigned to respond, the clarification was seldom recognizable as such. His style of writing here at FSHOD is like he's talking in 'code' to someone who already knows all HE knows. CC needs to write such that the comman person can understand what the message is...which may explain why no publisher will touch him, more so than a conspiracy to 'bury the secrets'. Eh, what?

I followed the links to check on interment sites in my state. Only 3. Geez, with our extended railroad system (used to transport nuclear waste to Yucca among other things) Ida thunk there'd be more. Frankly, I believe there is one that was left off the list. The Ravenna Arsenal in Ohio was primarily used to store and defuse or detonate old weaponry. I live about 30 miles away and while growing up we could occasionally hear these weapons being detonated. Sometime in the past 10 years the exterior of the Arsenal underwent a dramatic overhaul. There is brand-new chainlink fence with razor wire surrounding the entire thing. The main entrance has had a new chain link gate installed where there used to be only those swinging iron barriers, and the few buildings that can be seen are no longer in disrepair, but totally renovated. Since there are supposedly no troops stationed there, and it is no longer used for weapon disposal, I consider it a prime suspect for interment. SCARY!

I have never connected to anything in the printed word like I have to the above link. I will be purchasing the book from whence it came shortly, but in the meantime, this is an excerpt from a document found in the Vatican and copied and found again in the Austrian Hapsburg collection of a "scroll" dating to 100AD and translated and published in 1937. This purports to be words spoken by Jesus to the Essenes. The Dead Sea Scrolls would not be found for another twenty years. The Essenes and their archaeological remnants would only be discovered in the last couple of decades.
The words of Jesus would have been collated into the bible a couple of hundred years after this "scroll" was written.
Jesus has a contribution to make at FSHOD, and if you doubt that, look at the synchronicity of the excerpt to the recent discussions going on here. I can see each and every one of you in these words. I will not point any one of you to this excerpt as I know that each of you will carry away a valuable lesson. Mine is that 2,000 years is not that long. I posted a pic on one of my blogs of a flint knife, a scraper, etc. that I found the last weekend in September. These stone implements had been laying on the ground for millennia. I viewed your taped conversation, and you are right on the money. I don't know how to rectify what has happened, or how it even happened with the "oversight" of the AEC, DOE and NRC.
I know now that their was never any oversight and that the various Government oversight agencies were part of the problem, and never part of the solution.
I worked in the nuclear business for GE [ as a subcontractor employee ( slave) for the Naval Reactors Program] for thirty years. During 1982 I was promoted to manage all of the safety matters, at two Naval Reactors site [Saratoga Springs, NY - 4 reactors, and Windsor, CT- 1 reactor]. After I performed my first inspection of the sites I knew that the programs were several disasters waiting to happen. I did what I could to get voluntary compliance with the various government regulations for three years. I finally wrote an internal report which I distributed to the Government [DOE], GE, and IUE - 301 [Union].
The world fell in on me. I lasted for three years, until I was ushered of the site, where I worked, with an M-16 at my back. I have done and been plenty of places since my career ending inspection, as a Nuclear Physicist/Nuclear Engineer. So far not a single public official has dared to stand up to be counted. This includes Clinton, Schumer, my local Congressman, Senator John Glenn, my State and local officials. No one cares or everyone is too terrified to speak up.
The reactors being run on land, for training purposes, are full blown high power reactors being run w/o Containment Vessels, Emergency Core Cooling system, separate operating room facilities, or a local emergency plan. Additionally ships and subs are parked in dozens of shipyards around the world, also w/o these safety requirements mandated by the DOE/NRC for all land based nuclear reactors. What a mess if one or more of these plants were to meltdown. The Chaos, death and injuries cannot even be conceived at this point.

V..You are a discerning individual and I have always respected your pov. I'm not a vegetarian but have been ruminating about that for a long time. I used to bake a loaf of "essene bread" which requires that the wheat is "sprouted" for 7 days, than chopped and formed into a loaf and baked at (in modern terms 200) a temperature which does not destroy the "essence" of the live food. In fact, I have a bag of wheat that I expect will come in handy sooner or later. The fact that this article was published in 1937 and originally believed to be from the early part of the first century combined with my experience including FSHOD really made me feel that something timeless and true was in these pages. CDC Probe Links 21 Deaths to Cough Syrup

U.S. health officials this week cracked the case of what caused the mysterious deaths of 21 people in Panama since midsummer _ an industrial chemical in red cough syrup.
Officials continue to investigate how the medicine became contaminated. The Panamanian government has ordered the syrup removed from store shelves and the government factory that manufactured it shut down.
But U.S. health officials are tentatively counting the investigation as a success story in rapid investigation and international collaboration that may have prevented additional deaths.
"It was really a mystery illness that had everybody stumped," said Dr. Scott Dowell, who leads the Global Disease Protection program at the Atlanta-based U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Many of the victims suffered kidney failure, paralysis and sagging of the facial muscles and other symptoms. Last week, Panama's Ministry of Health asked the CDC to send help. By that point more than a dozen deaths had been reported.
Early Wednesday, CDC investigators found diethylene glycol in four white plastic cough syrup bottles flown in from Panama City. Diethylene glycol is a chemical cousin of antifreeze and is used to keep products like glue and cosmetics moist.
"I think everybody's feeling pretty confident" that the chemical's presence explains the illnesses, said Eric Sampson, director of the CDC environmental health lab that made the find.
U.S. scientists discovered the chemical's dangers in 1937, when at least 105 people died after taking a DEG-containing antibacterial medicine made by the S.E. Massengill Co. of Bristol, Tenn.
The disaster became a turning point in U.S. regulatory history, influencing Congress to give the Food and Drug Administration the power to certify the safety of drugs before they are sold to the public.
DEG poisonings have erupted occasionally since then in other parts of the world. In late 1995 and early 1996, more than 30 children were admitted to a hospital in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, with sudden kidney failure. An investigation by Haitian health officials, the CDC and others discovered diethylene glycol in acetaminophen syrup manufactured in Haiti.
As of Friday afternoon, the investigation had identified 58 illnesses in the outbreak, including the 21 deaths, CDC officials said. Panamanian officials said they have an antidote for the chemical and planned to administer it immediately to the sick.
CDC officials are trying to position themselves to more quickly react to unusual outbreaks of illness around the world. The agency has 200 full-time employees in 45 countries, up from the 87 employees in 38 countries it had in 2000.
The agency established response centers in Thailand in 2001 and in Kenya in 2004. This year, it also established three more, in China, Egypt and Guatemala.
Four investigators from the Guatemala center traveled to Panama to assist in the CDC investigation.
Investigators noted many of the patients were taking lisinopril, a blood pressure medication, but last weekend an FDA lab ruled that out as the cause. Tests of blood, urine and tissue from autopsies found no contagious diseases, either.
Some of the people who grew ill had been taking a sugarless cough medicine that was made in a pharmaceutical factory operated by Caja de Seguro Social, a government hospital system. That led investigators to test the medicine.
Wasn't there a recent study that determined that over the counter cough syrup has never actually worked?

I am curious as to who over the counter cough syrup actually works on. Its never helped me or my little one. I always have to end up going to get a RX from the DR.for really bad coughs.

About fifteen years ago, I had some prescription cough syrup that stopped the cough by rendering you unconscious. I remember one dose of it in particular because instead of going from the kitchen back to bed, I woke up on the floor halfway between a few hours later. I took no more of that stuff!
Afterwards, my doctor was a bit sheepish about the dosing level since he apparently did the same thing to his wife! Needless to say, this guy is not my doctor anymore!
An interesting story on Yahoo news about Bush's changing rationale for the war. A Cheney quote about the hopes of civilisation riding with them is more than a bit off. Civilisation hopes that they'll stop committing war crimes, not continue.

But there HAVE been some rather tough ones in the Pacific, especially in China, if recollection serves me. Could the influences we studied last year have been redirected to the Pacific (and/or other parts)???? Will have to check, but was wondering if MIMICS also records those storms, and if so, were the 'artifacts' present in those storms, seemingly strengthing and directing the course of the storms? The one thing that had me thinking about his quake as having been just not right, was that most of Honolulu was completely blacked out. Honolulu is , what, 5 islands over from the Big Island. I could understand Maui losing power as they are the next island over...but Oahu? I was reading anothr msg board and the people were very puzzled by this. From all accounts I read yesterday the geo guys said this was not at all volcanic related either and were really scratching thier heads about it.
The other thing, and you hit this right on the head Sunking, is that T and I were discussing some radar anomolies she's found in the last few days(I think)over HI. The pacific storms have been much more wicked than even the Atlantic storms were last year. Makes me believe thay moved the operation to a bigger play ground so that they had more space to steer the monsters around.
Just my musings...but seems alot of us are on the same page regarding this thinking.

I'm also inclined to think it might have been a pulse whose target was intended elsewhere and landed on Hawaii instead resulting in the larger than average quake. Maybe it was meant as a little payback for NK?
Count me in on the agreement with the idea that harrpicanes have more room to play in the Pacific than the Gulf of Mexico. There doesn't seem to be as much media coverage since it's not kicking the crap out of the lower 48 states.
I heard from Hawaiian Electric Co that the 2 & 3 story tall generators automatically shut down when in a big shake. If the machines cool off, they have to ramp back up slowly. He said its about the big parts contracting & expanding during temp changes. Then it takes all day to bring the whole grid back up. But that is the big city of Honolulu.
Here near the epicenter in tiny sleepy Kohala, the juice was out for only about 30 minutes. I was rather surprised when phone and elect returned so soon. Cell phones were down for a bit too.

I left town and could not return until late cuz damage to a bridge was discovered later, after I crossed it. Emergency vehicles including heavy equipment, and water trucks continued to use the bridge all day while civilians could not. Liability issues I suppose.
Kohala has but two access roads. The coast road with bridge is still closed. The mountain road was opened late last nite after clearing debris. The mountian road is narrow, and got half cut at a gulch. If it lost more, there's be no road to Kohala until they open the bridge.

This requires downloading hijack and saving to program files than running in "safe mode" to see all of the automatic programs. From there, you need to know what you are supposed to have there. Yep, and bridge is out until fixed, so its mountain road only. Bummer cuz humpbacks just arrived for season, and bridge is coast road.
All's back to normal, mostly, except for some destroyed buildings. Today I visited 150 yr old Kalahikiola church (old boston missionary). Most old loose rock walls are down...hard to tell what's holdin the roof up.

I have a Moonie story that I should like to share. While attending the University of Western Ontario way back in the 70's, I had a friend by the name of John Biermann that ended up working for a Liberal MP as an assistant. For reasons beyond my understanding, John suddenly bolted to San Francisco and joined the Moonies. HMMM... This became an "international intrigue" story in the Globe and Mail and on TV. The MP tried to get John out of the States but John refused to come back. I don't know if he was privy to "sensitive" information about the Canadian government, but I suspect that he was.
A few years later, I went to San Fran to look for him. I actually got picked up off the street by a Moonie recruiter within an hour of being in the city. I have the feeling that my laundry bag duffel bag that I was sporting, gave me away as a "prospect". I dutifully went along with the pair of recuiters to one of the few huge brick homes that had survived the original San Fran earthquake where we were treated to a very interesting vegetarian dinner and listened to a number of speakers that seemed to be saying Moon was the Messiah. The group of possibly 100 recruits buddied up with a few of the converted and I ended up with the lady who plucked me off the street in front of the bus station where I revealed that I was interested in being a Moonie and that I had a friend in the organization that was a bit controversial and that I would like to contact him if that were possible. To make a long story short, I got the bum's rush out the door. The Biermann story got more press but no John. He disappeared. End of....

US President Bush Makes Massive Land Purchase In Paraguay Ahead Of Expected War Crimes Charges

The American President’s daughter had used the cover of a United Nations group to ‘cover’ her mission to Paraguay to arrange this massive land purchase, and as we can see confirmed by the Associated Press News Service in their article titled "Jenna Bush joins UNICEF program in Paraguay", and which says:
"Jenna Bush came to this poor, landlocked South American country to take part in a UNICEF program for young professionals who volunteer in its activities here, the U.N. organization announced Monday. UNICEF released few details about the program involving the 24-year-old daughter of U.S. President George W. Bush, citing security concerns."
These reports suggest the these actions being taken by the Bush Family are in response to the expected War Crime Charges being filed by the International Committee for the Red Cross, and which we had reported on in our October 15, 2005 report titled ‘War Crimes’ Portfolio against United States President, Vice President and Defense Secretary Opened By International Committee of the Red Cross Charging ‘Crimes Against Humanity’, and wherein we had stated:

The ties between the Bush Family Cartel and Paraguay predate the current American President and have their roots going back to his grandfather Prescott Bush, the top American financier for the German Nazi Regime.
These ties between South America and the Bush’s were further solidified during the 1970’s when the current American President’s father, George Bush Sr., was director of the American Central Intelligence Agency, and working with then US Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, unleashed what was called ‘Operation Condor’ upon the South American Continent, and as we can read:

Further complicating the current state of affairs in the United States for their Military Leaders is their continued refusal to release for trial the infamous International Terrorist, and former Operation Condor operative, Luis Posada Carriles, and as we can read as reported by the People’s Weekly World News Service in their article titled "Posada and Bush’s ‘war on terror’ jam", and which says:
"Cuban exile and accused terrorist Luis Posada Carriles is back in the news. Posada is the admitted mastermind behind the bombing of a Cubana Airlines jet, which killed 73 people in a midair explosion over Barbados on Oct. 6, 1976.
Nicknamed “the bin Laden of Latin America,” Posada, currently being held at an El Paso, Texas, detention center for violating immigration law, presents a quandary for the Bush administration and its “war on terrorism.”
U.S. plans to deport Posada have gone awry. At least seven countries — Canada, Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador — have refused to take him.
At the same time, the Bush administration has refused to honor Venezuela’s request for Posada’s extradition to stand trial there. Posada is a Venezuelan citizen. In 1985, he escaped from a Venezuelan jail (with CIA help) while standing trial for the airliner bombing.

And according to newly released documents from National Security Archives, Posada told the CIA that he and other exile cohorts like Orlando Bosch (who freely walks the streets of Miami) were planning to bomb the plane.
Cuba’s National Assembly President Ricardo Alarcon said the Bush administration has a self-interest in covering up the case and declassified information. “The Bush administration wants to avoid a trial at all costs because someone will ask about the role of the CIA, and its director in 1976 was George Bush Sr.,” said Alarcon."
Most importantly about these events are the American people themselves, who in their failure to either see, or acknowledge, what their Nation has truly become, and which with each passing day resembles more and more the dreaded, and horrific, Nazi Empire of last century, and who’s leaders after their defeat had likewise sought refuge and protection from War Crimes Trials in the jungles of South America, will soon wake up to the true nightmare of what they’ve become.

After much reflection, I somewhat disagree with that hoary old chestnut. I have no doubt that plainclothes types have been spending time in my library. Though I think they're after the wrong people. I recall reading a true story in a copy of Reader's Digest in 1980. For his final paper, an engineering MIT undergrad solved the riddle about how the A-bomb uses conventional explosives to start the nuclear one.
The professor called the FBI to seize the paper, and the poor student got himself "debriefed". He graduated, though.

FDA Is Set To Approve Milk, Meat From Clones

Tuesday, October 17, 2006;
Three years after the Food and Drug Administration first hinted that it might permit the sale of milk and meat from cloned animals, prompting public reactions that ranged from curiosity to disgust, the agency is poised to endorse marketing of the mass-produced animals for public consumption.
The decision, expected by the end of this year, is based largely on new data indicating that milk and meat from cloned livestock and their offspring pose no unique risks to consumers.
"Our evaluation is that the food from cloned animals is as safe as the food we eat every day," said Stephen F. Sundlof, the FDA's chief of veterinary medicine, who has overseen the long-stalled risk assessment.
Farmers and companies that have been growing cloned barnyard animals from single cells in anticipation of a lucrative market say cloning will bring consumers a level of consistency and quality impossible to attain with conventional breeding, making perfectly marbled beef and reliably lean and tasty pork the norm on grocery shelves.
But groups opposed to the new technology, including a coalition of powerful food companies concerned that the public will reject Dolly-the-Lamb chops and clonal cream in their coffee, have not given up.
On Thursday, advocacy groups filed a petition asking the FDA to regulate cloned farm animals one type at a time, much as it regulates new drugs, a change that would drastically slow marketing approval. Some are also questioning the ethics of a technology that, while more efficient than it used to be, still poses risks for pregnant animals and their newborns.
"The government talks about being science-based, and that's great, but I think there is another pillar here: the question of whether we really want to do this," said Carol Tucker Foreman, director of food policy at the Consumer Federation of America.
That there is a debate at all about integrating clones into the food supply is evidence of the remarkable progress made since the 1996 birth of Dolly, the world's first mammalian clone, created from an udder cell of an anonymous ewe.
Scientists have now applied the technique successfully to cattle, horses, pigs, goats and other mammals. Each clone is a genetic replica of the animal that donated the cell from which it was grown.
Cloning could solve a number of long-standing farm problems. Many prize males are not recognized as such until long after they have been tamed by castration. With cloning, that lack of semen would not matter. Cloning also allows farmers to make many copies of exceptional milk producers; with natural breeding, cows have only one offspring per year, and half are males.
In the eyes of many in agriculture, cloning is simply the latest in a string of advances such as artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization that have given farmers better control over animal reproduction.
"Clones are just clones. They are not genetically engineered animals," said Barbara Glenn, chief of animal biotechnology at the Biotechnology Industry Organization.
The FDA agrees with that distinction, Sundlof said. The agency has already said it will regulate transgenic animals -- those that have been engineered by adding specific, valuable genes -- in much the way it regulates pharmaceuticals, under a new category called "New Animal Drugs." No such animals are currently on the market.
By contrast, proponents say, clones are simply twins, albeit born a generation apart.
It was October 2003 when the FDA released its first draft document concluding that clones and their offspring are safe to eat, prompting several cloning companies to scale up their operations.
But an agency advisory panel and the National Academies, while generally supportive, raised flags, citing a paucity of safety data.
That, and opposition led largely by the International Dairy Foods Association, which represents such large, brand-sensitive companies as Kraft Foods, Dannon, General Mills and Nestlé USA, put FDA approval on hold. For years the agency has asked producers to keep clones off the market voluntarily while the issues got sorted out, a delay that bankrupted one major company and has left others increasingly frustrated.
But now a large collection of new data submitted to the FDA has revitalized the effort, according to government officials and others.
The biggest new study is a detailed comparison of meat from the offspring of cloned and conventional boars created by Austin-based ViaGen Inc., a major producer of cloned farm animals. Company scientists agreed to share key results with a reporter but withheld details as required by the journal Theriogenology, which will publish the full report in its January issue.
Semen from four clones and three conventional boars was used to inseminate 89 females. A total of 404 progeny (242 from clones) were raised identically by government scientists at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Meat Animal Research Center in Clay, Neb., and slaughtered when they reached market size. (Because clones are so valuable, companies for now anticipate sending only their offspring to market.) Of the 14,036 measures of protein composition, fatty acid profiles and other meat components done on the offspring of clones by an independent lab, all but three were within the same range as those of the conventional animals, and only one was outside what the Agriculture Department considers normal.
The other large research report came from Cyagra, a cloning company in Elizabethtown, Pa.
In that study, 80 blood and urine measures, including various hormone levels, were taken in 10 newborn, 46 weanling and 18 adult clones. Results were indistinguishable from those obtained from conventional animals. Then 79 biochemical measurements from three cuts of meat taken from five male and six female adult clones were compared with those from matched cuts from conventional animals. Again, no differences were found, said Cyagra's director of marketing, Steve A. Mower. The results have been submitted to the FDA and are being reviewed by a scientific journal.
"The data are very clear," said ViaGen President Mark Walton. "You really can't tell them apart."
In light of the new findings, and the FDA's near completion of a complicated, interagency review demanded by the White House Office of Management and Budget, Sundlof anticipates releasing a formal draft risk assessment by the end of the year, along with a proposed "risk management" plan. Those documents would allow the marketing of clones and their offspring for food and milk after a final period of public comment.
Unless, that is, the opponents manage to stop the process, which they are trying to do on two fronts.
One is the petition filed Thursday by the Washington-based Center for Food Safety. It asks the FDA to regulate clones, not just transgenics, as New Animal Drugs. It also calls for environmental impact statements to evaluate the environmental and health effects of each new proposed line of clones.
"The available science shows that cloning presents serious food safety risks, animal welfare concerns and unresolved ethical issues that require strict oversight," the petition states.
Industry scientists derided the petition's safety concerns, built largely on a theoretical possibility that subtle genetic changes seen in some clones may alter the nutritional nature of meat. If those genetic changes were significant, Mower said, they would cause biochemical changes in milk or meat, none of which have been found.
But issues of ethics and public acceptance are not easily dismissed, several experts said.
Surveys show that more than 60 percent of the U.S. population is uncomfortable with the idea of animal cloning for food and milk. The single biggest reason people give is "religious and ethical," with concerns about food safety coming in second, said Michael Fernandez, executive director of the Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology, a nonpartisan research and education project.
Those sentiments are a big concern to dairy companies, which fear that any association with cloning could harm milk's carefully honed image of wholesomeness.
Confidential documents from the International Dairy Foods Association, obtained by The Washington Post, indicate the group has played a key role in slowing FDA action and propose a strategy for blocking any future FDA approval.
Association spokeswoman Susan Ruland said the group opted not to adopt the lobbying strategy described in those documents, which included using friends in Congress and "continued outreach to the White House."
In any case, Sundlof said, the FDA has no authority to make decisions based on ethics concerns. Nor is it inclined to call for labeling of products from clones, as some have demanded. For one thing, clonal meat or milk would be impossible to authenticate, since there is no way to distinguish them from conventional products.
The FDA may already be too late. Several owners of clones have been selling semen to farm clubs and others vying to grow prize-winning cattle. Most of those animals end up being slaughtered, sold and eaten, experts said.
"That you can go online today to any number of different Web sites and purchase semen from cloned bulls tells you there are cloned sires out there fathering calves in the food supply," Walton said.
Like it or not, Walton and others said, the clones are out of the barn.

We're all friends here so I promise you don't have to yell at me. :-) However, and perhaps I'm only playing at semantics, but I'm afraid I will have to slightly disagree with you there.
I would suggest that slavery and control of us all is the ONE GOAL being played for, but there are any number of plans A, B, C and so on to reach that goal which was my point with my blog post. If the current Empire gambit should fail, again, then perhaps the Moon video is a foreshadowing of yet another ruse. The Messiah gambit, if you will.
Please understand that I am nowhere near as easily distracted as you seem to imply. I am deliberately using chess terminology because TPTB view all of this as nothing more than a game. Very real consequences, very real loss of lives, very real harm to all who would oppose, to be sure, but in "their" minds nothing more than a game all the same.

I find this whole affair to be a bit disturbing for this being the 21st century and it seems an unhealthy trend.
I also heard, listening to some caller on local talk radio, the to some extent, the IMs bandied about seem to indicate that there was some 'gay-baiting' being conducted by the Pages. It was noted that the parents of the page associated with Foley had hushed things up and that the former page is keeping his head down...hmmm, poor choice of words...'keeping a low profile'...and possibly because what was being done by the pages was possibly illegal.

I watched the video and at first was turned off by the whole concept. But i have to say he did have some good points an I watched it all the way through. My complaint, as it is with all of these harbingers of so called truth, is that they refuse to offer any answers unless you buy the tape or book.
It's such a turn off to me that I instantly pitch it out. If this crisis so so damn important, and we are to aspire to be these cleanesed beings, then why isn't he being more altruistic and giving the answers as opposed to selling the answers?

I didn't mean to inmlpy that you, pesonally were trying to push me to buy this guys stuff. You missed the, maybe too subltle point. It's the same gripe i have had with RCH and with Stitchen. This Earth shattering news gets completely diluted because only those who can afford can pay for the privlegde of this "inside track" knowledge. How that helps your fellow human being I am not sure.

CNN wondered out loud why private planes were allowed to fly over New York City including their example; crop dusters. This put the mayor on the spot. Specialists in the subject pointed out that these small planes have a very small "payload" roughly equivalent to one passenger. This "expert" didn't seem to be convincing so the reporters continued to torment TPTB with questions about why aircraft are allowed to fly over any city. This was truly getting out of hand so the "mayor" quelled the press and the ticker tape parade at the bottom of the screen (no live report) concluded that "something will be done about it". I'm holding my breath.
And by the way. Who needs aliens to take us against our will...we have our President to do that now.

General Rick Hillier, chief of the Canadian defense staff, said Thursday that Taliban fighters were using the forests as cover. In response, the crew of at least one armored car had camouflaged their vehicle with marijuana.
"The challenge is that marijuana plants absorb energy, heat very readily. It's very difficult to penetrate with thermal devices. ... And as a result you really have to be careful that the Taliban don't dodge in and out of those marijuana forests," he said in a speech in Ottawa, Canada.
"We tried burning them with white phosphorous -- it didn't work. We tried burning them with diesel -- it didn't work. The plants are so full of water right now ... that we simply couldn't burn them," he said.
Even successful incineration had its drawbacks.
"A couple of brown plants on the edges of some of those [forests] did catch on fire. But a section of soldiers that was downwind from that had some ill effects and decided that was probably not the right course of action," Hiller said dryly.
One soldier told him later: "Sir, three years ago before I joined the army, I never thought I'd say 'That damn marijuana'."
