Sunstorm by Arthur C. Clarke & Stephen Baxter:
The following is book review I wrote for Goro Adachi's STRUG earlier this year. This was written in the timeframe when there had been, in this time of the solar minimum, a great deal of remarkable solar activity.
I post this here on FSHOD because there have been some discussions going on with regards to the two author's featured here...Arthur C. Clarke & Stephen Baxter.
So, I hope this post makes sense and interests you in the book:
Goro, you recently mentioned the sci-fi novel Sunstorm, a collaboration by authors Arthur C. Clarke and Stephen Baxter. I recently read this book and enjoyed it, especially considering all the Sun-related news and events that you've been discussing. Being an avid reader, I have noticed an outpouring of books by various authors that feature the Sun and solar events as a focal point in the story plot. Oddly, these books have seemed to appear in my public library about the same time as the recent sunspot and flare activity increased.
The setting of Sunstorm's Earth in our near-future has some interesting features. Global warming, regardless of the cause, has caused temperatures and sea levels to rise markedly. Human society has made the concomitant adaptations in technology and attitudes to deal with these changes. Nano-technology is expanding, and 'smart' technology has become commonplace to the extent that your clothes and even the walls of your home are 'smart'. Civil rights have been extended to chimpanzees and even to sentient computer systems and machines. The Moon has had an active colony for 20 years and Man has landed on Mars. The European Union has morphed into the Eurasian Union,with it's President (elected in a surprisingly conservative touch) being the King of England (!). The Dome of the Rock has, years earlier, been destroyed by means of a nuclear hand-grenade.
The story begins in June of 2037 with a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) of such force that it generates a geomagnetic storm on Earth that exceeds all previous recorded storms. The global impact is one of major disruption on all levels, especially given the extent of computerization in all facets of life. This event was predicted by a neutrino matter expert stationed on the Moon who, when consulted by the Astronomer Royal, lends forth with the prediction that on April 20, 2042, the Sun will erupt with such a storm that the atmosphere, the seas, and all life on Earth will be destroyed! The humans on the Moon and even on Mars will also be killed!
As mentioned in the Publisher's Weekly review you quoted in your CQ Sunstorm post on Jan 18th, the heroine Bisea Dutt is returned to London on the day of the first Sunstorm by the alien Firstborn. Well prior to that, Bisea had been held with a host of other characters from different places and times on a 'composite Earth' (my term) created by the Firstborn called.....Mir. Bisea had been in a UN patrol on June 8....and was returned to London on June 9.....but she had been on Mir for 5 years! After this bit of Time Travel, Bisea plays a vital part in helping save Earth. But why did the Firstborn return only her? When it is the Firstborn who are responsible for setting in motion a chain of events that cause the Sun's deadly eruption?
The story then goes into the efforts to save Earth...which of course, they do. Not without some 2001 Space Odyssey-esque communications shutdowns on the Moon by governments determined to withhold the truth, being concerned about 'causing panic' on Earth.
Sunstorm was a very interesting read and I heartily recommend it. I was amazed that many of the themes and subjects you (i.e. Goro's STRUG') discuss were touched on in this book. You will certainly get some 'hard science' education about the Sun and how it works, but in an interesting and enjoyable manner. And considering the double eruptions of the past two days and other recent solar activity in this solar minimum, it might be quite timely to obtain some of this education!"
Sunking's List of Themes Relevant to STRUG (and FSHOD!) discussions:
- The Sun. CMEs, geomagnetic storms and all the disruptions and impacts they have.
- Time travel. Bisea Dutt is taken by the Firstborn on June 8th 2037 and returned on June 9th... but to her, she has been gone 5 years.
- The world created by the Firstborn where Bisea is taken is named... Mir!
- Alien/Enki/'Contact' Communications. The Firstborn's involvement with humankind and their revealing the circumstances of when the Sunstorm occurs to Bisea.
- Government Cover-ups. There is a 2001 Space Odyssey-esque communications shutdown on the Moon and overall security during the investigation about the Sunstorm.
- The Royal Family. The President of the Eurasian Union in 2037 is... The King of England!
- The Dome of the Rock. Briefly mentioned, having been destroyed by a nuclear hand-grenade.
- NASA. Well, space in general. A colony on the moon, manned landings and colony- establishment on Mars.
- Disasters impacting Earth and Mankind.
No time to refine the above other than the obvious places I did, but I thought it might interest some of you. But I hope your interest is piqued enough to go find the book and read it.

I read 'Against the Fall of Night' Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Most interesting and, I felt, contained some of Clarke's most moving writing. The conclusion is right up your alley, you'd be most pleased. Sword might even be most pleased with some of the plot.

Hey Robert..These images of the sun throw me a wrench. I can't help feeling that the sun we see with our own eyes is real time and not 93 million miles away delayed time. Do you have a Soho on Comet Neat as it spirals in and out of the Soho frame? And the strange spacecraft Soho pix? There is such alot of sifting these days. Trust no one and go with that one true factum, never trust your government.

So where to put all those folks who are NOW...MANY of them NOW...who are saying that there ARE specific areas and times where liquid water may survive on the surface.

This is an unusal event to me. It looks like a subsurface sunspot that is spiraling just under the surface or has subsumed matter from somewhere else. To me it looks like a swarming of energy like a big mac attack.

Depends on the pixel resolution and if we can STILL pick outor at least 'see' features like the 'COATHANGER'...which is only barely visible in the current 'base ESA' image. Plus remember while I can and do work from the largest image available...it MUST be scalled down to a smaller jpg for web users...AND...the resolution MUST also translate down as well...this one I think does.
If yours is BETTER...in COLOR...could you also figure out how to overlay the co-ordinates onto it? The layers containing the annotated names will NOT simply copy onto to the different image with larger dimensions (already learned) so ALL labels will need to be re-done and have SAME Q-#'s in SAME SPOTS !!!
But when done..post it...call and send me email...and I'll download it quick for you to clear up webspace hosting.

Bob. Hey. No. I not meant the color versions. Black & white. I also am talking about the ESA PSA archive shits.
The color band ratio images are not as large as the ND3 images.
These are the highest rez & most bang for detail. Yet these also have to be enhanced to see details better. A real thorough enhancement campaign is still needed to bring out & make beeter the view it all provides. Especially when they are composited together.
That is one remarkable artscape full of artstructures & un-natural
surface featurings.
If I can figure out how to lay co-ordinates on it Bob,.. I would NOT have been hinting to have you do something to it to make one & place it on. ;-)
ESA has YET to release an ND3 image for the coathanger & city square area included. WHY they aint putting it up in thier archive is beyond me. Or any of the raw files they used to show & provide those angled Face images.
WHY????? Time enough has passed for them to OBLIGE thier archive with these images???
Where the coat hanger & city square area is, I may have to cheat. Use MGS or Odyssey data to fill in that scabbly gap in that area.
Or I will use ESA's crappy sizd versions to fill that missing space to at least fill it to fit.

All Crap!! I NOT trust it at all any versions I seen from anyone!! Not to demean anyones work. But we are bein shitted on regarding color. So I focus on the details instead. The colors I suspest is REALLY there, I KNOW will fall in conjunction to the surface features & releif, bringing out more the artwork, that NASA seems always tryin to hide & help fade to fizzle to make it LOOK eroded & dirtlike with nothing all that much to see. :-/

I was watching the same Hist.Ch. show about Freemasons. Interesting, esp. the design of the forts.
I was reading, as usual, this weekend, and came across something that struck me sharply..I had never thought about it quite this way, though the 'data' backing this up was known to me and so the point of view made sense....The Cult of Amun-Ra was a Sun Cult that never died out, rather it exists today in two forms...The Roman Catholic Church (which can be equated with Europe) and the Freemasons (which can be equated with America).
Sounds silly, now that I write it out, but if you think about it some, that thought can be seen to have some significance.

I'm pretty good with Flash and ok with Lightwave 3D. If you want to use higher rez images, I can make a flash application for you that would allow you to move around the image and zoom in and out.
I could also add animated rollovers and be able to link those to more detailed descriptions.
If interested, I would need your source file(s). Hopefully you are doing your work in PhotoShop or something else that has layers so that the labels and grid can be separated.
Now if you have hi-rez grayscale images, I might be able to turn those into topographical displays in my 3D program and be able to render out some animated fly-throughs.
I'm currently in between projects, so I have a little bit of time on my hands. Let me know if you're interested.
Same goes for anyone else that might be in need of some Flash/3D work.

Just a little anecdote. I received a copy of an interesting astronomy program called Celestia. It allows traveling visually to a huge variety of planets and asteroids and comets etc.
What disappointed me, was the texture images related to Iapetus (orbiting Saturn).
Apparently people can do add-ons of textures, 3d models or 'objects' for Celestia.
This is outside my skills at this point, but I thought I'd mention it for one such as you.

I've been having a very bad week with msn runtime errors, anti-sypware program doing things it shouldn't, ups failed during a power outage while windows was installing system updates. Luckily I didn't have a total crash, and through many hours of fixing, got everything back to normal, but now my keyboard shift key is hooped. The rest of the week can only get better.

Taco, FWIW Ed Dames also said 10 years ago a fungus would come from space and destroy all the trees. He said (then) that within 6 months we would all be suffocating etc...

Yesterday I had to take mom to the Dr. up in Nashville and had to unfortunately bring my son with us, who was, of course- bless his heart, bored to tears.I told him he wouldn't have to come to any follow up appointments, so when we got home I decided to call a babysitter that I use when I am up here. She is really fond of him and he of her. So, I call and the number I had for her but find out it has been diconnected.
I was pretty bummed.
Half jokingly I look up to the sky and say, "Hey God, could you please tap Nancy on the shoulder and have her call me."
within 15 minuites the phone rang and it was Nancy

she was calling my Mom to tell her she had moved and find out how she was.(which is not well at all)
Needless to say I was FLABBERGASTED-still am.

Thoughts n prayers to you scarlatem...I was telling someone else about the 6 times I've bee in that "Great In-Between"...and the last 3 times I tried...each time...to move on and just get going to where I, by then, KNEW there was a much cooler place waiting for me..i.e. no bills, no worries, and a loving environment warm and protective...and each time I was PUSHED back down here.

Disclosure - seemed to be the "topic" of veracity with Hoagland on his last C2C. I only got bits and pieces of that show - but it seems like there was some background vemanace. Like he knows something that no one else does, and he has been spreading that seed around his peers and contemporaneities...

One of my cubi neighbors was just talking to his brother over in Okinawa. Eye of da Storm was fixin to hit. He opened the door whilst on the phone and I could hear the wind a roarin'! Kinda cool....when it's half a world away! Thanks for tracking this storm.

Do you see it to? I think maybe the 'bars' we saw in 2005 have been either erased or the tech has gotten better. But those dots of red light my be an artifact of 'diddlin' about'.

Hard to tell.
It is suspicious to me that there appears to be two almost straight lines of red and yellow areas to the northwest that are nearly at right angles to each other as the eye approaches 19.5.
And the edges of those two areas seem to have litle fingers facing toward the eye or the inner part of the storm that are rocking back and forth that appear to be tickling the storm to speed it up.
But, since I don't really know what MIMIC is measuring I can only give my humble opinion of what it loks like to me. And then don't know if it is 'evidence' of cause or effect of storm speding up at 19.5.
I think I saw on one of the earliest MIMIC loops of this storm an area that more closely resmbled the purple or dark blue "egg beaters" of the 2005 (katrina/rita/wilma) season.
But it looked like the egg beater had a blurry mask over it.
I'll see if I can find a more specific time reference for that.
Looking at the forcast path of this storm, if it is a HAAPICANE, I wonder who has it out for Okinawa and Japan?
Of course it could miss that right turn and crash straight into North Korea!

Sometimes there can be a lot involved in this process(stitching, rotating, zooming), this can help if you want to know how the current image came to be.

Shuttle's Name Misspelled On NASA Launch Pad Sign
Someone Called Kennedy Space Center NASA To Fix Typo
The first NASA sign at launch pad 39A encouraging the next launch of space shuttle Endeavour at Kennedy Space Center was misspelled and noticed by someone looking at the craft.
Then the shuttle rolled out from the Vehicle Assembly Building Wednesday, a giant "Go Endeavour" sign was put on a fence in front of the craft.
However, one item was missing from the sign: the "u" in Endeavour.
Someone spotted the mistake and called KSC to fix it, WKMG-TV reported.
NASA scrambled someone out to pad 39A with a new sign that has orbiter Endeavour's name spelled correctly.
A photo with the correct spelling was also posted on the Kennedy Space Center's Web site.
The orbiter is named after HM Bark Endeavour, the ship commanded by 18th century explorer James Cook; the name also honored Endeavour, the Command Module of Apollo 15. This is why the name is spelled in the British English manner, according to Answers.com.

Go to SETTINGS and then TEMPLATE.
SAVE YOUR TEMPLATE CODE INTO NOTEPAD OR WORD DOCUMENT. Use copy/paste. But whatever you do, save this puppy first, else if you F-up....you are F'ed-Up but good. If you don't comprehend any of what I'm telling you, then touch nothing.
Of course, I figured it out without any help, so how difficult can it be, eh?
Scroll down thru the body of the template until you see a section that says div class="post-body" enclosed in <> signs.
Now scroll slowly down until somewhere before the "End .post" lines you see a line that starts with a '<' sign followed by an 'a' then has class="comment-link" and $BlogItemCommentCreate$ along with some other stuff.
Now, right click and copy this line.
Scroll up slowly until you see a line that says "BlogItemTitle".
I keep saying "slowly" because it's easy to lose your place in the small template window.
Paste the line you copied right under this line.
Now click Preview. If you don't see your change, click Refresh.
If that doesn't work... hehehehe....give me Admin rights and I'll take a look at it for you and when done you may revoke admin rights.

If these elements supposedly quickly breakdown, how quick is quick? Because how nearby is a nearby supernova from whence these elements supposedly came? For if the elements did a little bit of inter/intra-galactic space travel (as this theory implies), they must have had the 'hammer down' to get here quick enough to put the heat on Iapetus before they quickly brokedown!
I also wonder about the concept of rotational slowdown. Sounds OK...one of those things one just accepts based on plying with a top as a kid, but do we have proof of this and how it works? I just read a fascinating book called The Lucifer Effect by Philip Zimbardo. If his name sounds familiar it's because he was the "author" of the 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment. In the book he uses his past knowledge to explain "how" the abuses at Abu Ghraib could have happened...situational brainwashing.
It's a detailed account of what really happened during that week in 1971 at Stanford ending with a point by point "prosecution" of Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld (among others) regarding their hand in the horrible abuses (which mirror almost exactly) at Gitmo and Abu Ghraib.
Brain washing or making "evil" people out of normal healthy adults, it turns out, has more to do with situational forces than actual inherit tendencies. Evil is made, in other words.
I couldn't put this book down and finished it in 2 days-despite its length. Highly recommended.

I am not registered to reply to you on your blog, but after reading what you had to say I will comment here as its relevant to my last post.
If I am to take what Zimbardo has said as truth, to the best of our knowledge, then your statement about perception IS 100% correct.
Zimbardo found that perception is extremely important (if not everything) when assesing a situation as legitimate. Those who became "prisioners" during the SPE were told ahead of time that it was an experiment-but because the treatment of them was SO realistic within 24 hours these men, who were free to quit at anytime, completely emeshed themeslves into believeing they were actually real prosoners in a REAL prison-not just college kids in a psycology experiment. Not one person ever said "you have to release me because this is only an experiment"!!! Within 36 hours 2 men had complete mental breakdowns and had to be "paroled".
It took the "gaurds" about 48 hours to start becoming really abusive-and once that line was passed the abuses only ramped up. It got so bad that the 2 week experiment was ended after only a week for frear of the mental states of the prisoners and that someone might actually be seriously hurt because of the increased abuse.
The bottom line is that if one percieves a situation to be a certian way (whether it be true or not) one will behave as if the situation IS reality. The line becomes so blurred that it can take a considerable amount of time before that person can accept "real" reality again.
The scary part of it s that it takes less time to brainwash than it does to un-brainwash.
Now, based on that, one has to assume that what the MIC etc... have a very vested intrest in making us NOT believe-but those who are percieveing them as illigitimate, ie us here, we can't be so easily disuaded because we don't believe anything they have to say. If they had presented themselves as more credible, and quit the BS they might have had a shot. The bottom line is those who believe in ruins on the moon, aliens, paranormal etc..., problably will not be able to become nonbelievers until someone whom they percieve as legit, comes out and says. "Don't believe".
Yes, indeed, it IS ALL about perception.

The Military has USED the SPE as a model for the last 30+ years as a way to "prevent" abuses. They also have used it as a way to prevert it to show how quickly one can "imprison"(mentally) detainees-or at least make THEM believe they are guilty. Zimbardo is horrified at this preversion and that's why he takes Bush etc.. to task.
While Sword's statement about perception may be 100% correct, that doesn't mean anything ELSE is! ;)

I am no 'next' Dali Lama nor do I belong to any concealed societies.

Self-enquiry becomes a practice of merely observing. Seeing what passes for thoughts and flows on by.
Observing an inner 'activity'. Its like a first step, of witness consciousness.
In that, the chatter, the doubting, the judging, the worrying, becomes 'seen'.
Seen as a 'tick tock' 'klik klak' 'back and forth' 'eb and flow'.
Watching with focus, like on a good tv show and one does begin to observe and see WHAT is arising,
in what we think is our thoughts.
Realizing that if I have just observed it, then what is IT, that is going on? really?
SO, rather than one saying "I'm gonna get a grip on my thinking", one at first merely observes it. No control effort would ultimately satisfy transcending the mind mechanism.
Persisting at random and frequent exercises of acute self enquiry does lead to occasions of break through obviousness when a moment of self-judgement or doubt happening gets seen in that very instant it arises.
Yet you observed it. How is that then? How can you just be sitting and observe, a thought pass through(inherently negative or negating),
yet be somehow not IT?
Thats the kicker right there.
That first time sitting one night when I 'saw' a thought arise "I'm never gonna get better" "I'm falling apart"....or a judgmental one once when I judged an elderly lady (of course negative). It came with an inner 'phrase' like " Oh crap a friggin old lady!!, pain in the butt".. funny thing is..she was still 65 feet away crossing the road towards the store I was working in!

FWIW For the last few months I have been listening to a pod cast about meditation and Buddihism. (Zencast for those interested) I have been listening to lectures and trying to get a basic grasp of mindfulness and what it entails. It's far more challenging than one thinks, and you are obviously have a far greater understanding of it than I do... but even with my introductory knowledge of it, I do comprehend what you are saying.
Mindfulness is a very very hard "practice". (Because that's exactly what it is, practice).
I applaud your efforts to see beyond the base level and stive for higher. You have always been one to listen with intent and we could all learn a thing or two from you.

Moving from the grosser experience into the subtler, really is dang hard practice(as Scarletm said. I found even when the patterns are seen, they are not immediately/instantly resolved or transcended. There is some time involved. But there are real breakthrough 'events' of realization along the way.

The agency said tracking radars will follow the objects until they are about two hours away from atmospheric re-entry. Warnings would be issued if the debris seems likely to pose a threat.
