The Christmas Train

At this time of year my mind goes back to the days of my youth in the 1950's and 60's...to the ole 'family house'in Ironton, Ohio, where my grandma and grandpa lived. The Christmas holidays were always great there...lots of family gathered, people we knew dropping buy to visit and drop off sweets and goodies, and tables and buffets that were literally groaning under the weight of multiple varieties of cakes and pies and, of course, the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners. We often had snow. I know that today, it sounds like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting, but it was 'for real' and the best Christmases I've ever had.
One of my favorite things about these gatherings was just sitting around and listening to all the stories being told by family and guests alike. Lord, how we laughed and sometimes even cried when it involved someone that was no longer with us...but mostly we laughed and laughed. It was how I learned about my family and who they were and where they came from. Oh how I wish I had had a tape recorder, or even thought to write their tales down.
I was looking thru another blog http://k9pincushion.blogspot.com/, wherein the owner displays art of all kinds, when I first saw this picture. I saved it immediately, just because I thought it was cool. Now, as we get closer to Christmas, it brings back to mind a great story, one I first heard at one of those beloved family Christmases.
For 30 years. my great-grandfather Terry Garfield Wesley worked for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. For many of those years he was the engineer on the 'George Washington', affectionately known as simply 'The George'. The George Washington, put into service in April 1930, was (along with the B&O's Capitol Limited) the first all air-conditioned long distance train. The George was C&O's premier passenger train, traveling overnight between Washington and Cincinnati (with connections between Charlottesville and Newport News, Va., and Ashland and Louisville, Kentucky).

A goodly portion of the George's route was through the states of Virginia and West Virginia. If you've ever been to West Virginia, you will quickly note that in many locales the homes, highways and railroad tracks are placed quite close together, being tightly hemmed in by the hills on every side. Thus, Engineer Wesley soon came to know the faces of the families whose habitations were situated so near the tracks. And as can be the case in such 'passing relationships', a certain unspoken bond of friendship is formed. And especially so in the case of the children he passed everyday, as a ritual of horn-tooting and energetic hand-waving was required during every trip.
But while Engineer Wesley smiled and waved back, he was saddened and often horrified at the deep poverty he saw. Again, if you've ever been to West Virginia and gotten away from the cities, you will have seen evidence of this poverty...even in recent times, but especially so back then. But the poverty of the children really "plucked at his heartstrings". Especially so at Christmas-time, for he knew that there would be 'hardly any Santa Claus at all' for these poor children whose faces lit up so brightly whenever the train rolled thru. I saw him openly weep at the thought of the plight of those poor folk.
So Grandpa Wesley, with the help of some fellow church members and C&O employees, put together a big bag of goodies and on Christmas Eve, 'The George' was transformed into Santa's sleigh, stopping at all the places along the way where the smiling children were always waving. Each child would get a gift, and mom or dad, too...althought it might only be a wooden pistol, a hand-sewn dolly, or a jar of apple butter with a nice bit of ribbon around the lid. But Grandpa Wesley said the gifts he handed out paled in comparison to the gifts he received...the thrill of excitement and the smiles of the children, the unspoken message of the handshake given by the dad's, or the tender look in the tear-filled eyes of the mothers in appreciation for the kindess and thoughtfulness of the C&O people in bringing Christmas to them, for making the kids feel 'special', if only for a moment.
And year after year, this act of love was repeated, until it became something of a legend. I have a newspaper clipping reporting on his retirement, wherein this tale is told and there are quotes from people who said that in many cases, this gift was the only gift these folks received. And they spoke of their undying love and admiration of my great-grandfather for the love he showed them.
Everytime I read this clipping, I get teary-eyed. This good man was by no means rich, a humble man, a church-going man...oh, a 32nd degree Blue Lodge Mason, Jas. ;) But he was in a position to form a relationship and broadcast his feelings of mercy and love for his fellow-man, and his heart and training made him take action...and not just at Christmas. I pray I could only be a 10th as good a man as he.
I maintain that the more I study and learn about all the things we discuss here at FSHOD, that just about everything boils down to the fact the we each have an impact on this world, this kharma or consciousness or whatever that drives this crazy nutty world. Do something unexpectedly nice for another person....be it a gift, a word, a simple handshake or a smile. It doesn't have to take a lot of money or a lot of time, and it can be done whilst doing your everyday activities and chores. It can be a family member, it can be that homeless person you just passed on the street, or even that person at work you hate.
The gift of love takes many forms, but the simplest is oft times the greatest and returned back to you an hundred-fold. Many folk will read that and say BAH! Well, as corny as it sounds, this is the truth...fully disclosed, honest and proven true countless times throughout our lives.

I did not personally 'know' anyone affiliated with the railroads, but have always
had a fond fascination for it. Each year my father would setup an awesome Lionel
set around the tree. On Christmas morning, THAT was what I wanted to 'play' with.
I still have THAT set and over the years, I have been trying to slowly add to it
and restore it to a useable condition.. parts are hard to find and gawdawful expensive
but it still has the same effect on me..
..and MY kids, all grown up and gone now, never had the opportunity..

What does it take to be sponataneously kind?
To feel for a moment the pain in others and to act in some response.
A gesture of such brilliance of magnitude as to eclipse the detail of the action itself.
Can you imagine the wave of elation those children fealt when that train, they cherished so much, stopped, and met them with a gift of love and a trinket of something tangible to embrace and have joy?
What a relationship, it leaves me speachless, reflecting on the trains of my youth and the people I knew of that great tradition.
Of the times we waved at the conductors in their freight train and the few occassions we could actually catch up to a slow one and jump on a box car for a little ride up the tracks to the 'Dairy Queen" for an ice cream.
BlastedI know a model train specialist. A wonderfully excentric ol fella, who ships little train parts and accessories all over the world. If any one knows where to get what you need it would be him. He might even have it in his own supplies. His name is Harold Rowe and his quirky place is called Malwood Station. I can e-mail you his email address if you like. Lots of figurines and scenery stuff too.

Although I would not want to dampen the spirit of protest, I know
that Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and many other wars are being managed by
what is known as the "Pentagon Psy-Ops" that is built on over 200
years of psychological studies and knowledge of "Mind Control".
This is not some limp "conspiracy theory"...this mind control is
being practised NOW...in the media..and in YOUR mind!
The entire phenomena of "The 60's" anti war movement was constructed on the discovery
of LSD. A drug that was later engineered into modern pharmaceutical
drugs...that are used TODAY to drug anyone who tells you what I am
telling you now...out of existence!

Officials say there were no injuries reported. The plane was not damaged. The aircraft did not leave the pavement, but did run over a couple of airfield lights. It returned to the gate under its own power.
Blair was among the 343 passengers on the plane, but the U-S Secret Service has no additional information about his trip. A Downing Street official says the prime minister and his family were not hurt in the mishap.
He wouldn't say where the Blair family was headed, but they have taken vacations to Bermuda before. An airport spokesman says there was some resurfacing work and relighting, so the lighting was poor.

Before leaving da Merry shores of H'England for 'good', I used to drive by Stone-Henge Twice a week. The 3 hour journey that I took twice a week to commute from mi sea-side apartment to work for Cisco in Reading (West of London) went right by it.. Here's the coincidence; The road right next to Stone-Henge, is called the A303
There is a large Military base (several of them) down in that area too...
...and ta re-state the main road (free-way) called the A303.

Amazing, most all of the news reports today mentioned everything about Ford except his involvment in the Warrn Commision, which 'allegedly' (LOL!) investigated the JFK Assassination. And I thought it worthy of remark that on NPR, they featured remarks from Betty Ford, Jimmy Carter, President George Bush and ... Aaaaaahnold!
I personally think Ford was a tool of TPTB/The Secret Cabal/etc via the Warren Commission and the pardoning of Nixon. Amidst the Watergate investigation, they used that old saw about 'the country needs to heal and cannot stand the strain of further discord' (referring to the 'Crazy Years' of the 60's, Vietnam and Watergate. What BS!), but the hard result was that there was never any investigation into the criminal machinations of the Republican party. Had that investigation proceeded, large and numerous questions would have been raised about American politics and it's workings that would have really shocked, demoralized then angered the public. The pardon was, essentially, putting blinders over the eyes, and minds, of the American people, who could not be allowed to even suspect how viruently corrupt American govenment was. How even then, our democracy...our republic...was actually a fascist corpocracy. And those powers could NOT let the 'charade' be exposed, just like they could NOT let JFK thwart their plans for Vietnam a decade before.
Ford was also the launching pad, so to speak, for Cheney, Rumsfeld and GHW Bush...and all linked to Kissinger, et al. IMHO, the real powers behind the JFK Assassination, could not have been happier with this outcome, the impact and influence of which is being felt 30 years later.

I see that and while each little data pont may seem to have meaning or represent truth, some are also outrageous and the whole page, when taken as an aggregate or on the whole, well I have to step back from it and ponder 'WTF?'. Then, at the bottom, it looks to be an appeal to end public execution (which I personally agree with ending)? So I'm led to question the whole shebang.

Christmas nite I was lying on a beach near 19.5 (not that 19.5 matters much in this instance, but I kinda like it)
Of course it was a magical tropical beach night by the moonlit sea, but it was the night sky that kept me awake till dawn arrived. Lotsa average falling stars, but around 330 or so there came this one from the east horizon that plowed all the way across until it disappeared on the west horizon. it was bluish white and it briefly left a bluish white bilateral trail kinda like a speedboat.
I wonder if it was a meteor or whatever that passed thru and exited back into space...do they do that ?

Hey, thanks for that blog link. I haven't read that specific book, but I have looked into some of what Ms. Jadczyk has to say and am not entirely unreceptive to her work, despite certain issues I have with the whole channeling concept, hehe. I do seriously thank you, though, as I was unaware she was also blogging.
I know I have been rather absent from here, lately. I promise, it's nothing against any of y'all. I mostly needed to take a serious step back from all of my online endeavours and really think about the rather caustic attitude I was beginning to develop. Suffice to say, I have found some renewal and refreshment of focus and plan to be more active again soon. I also have another blog project of my own in the works that I promise won't develop the same bitterness and venom that managed to derail my last effort. And yes, that means my new blog won't be political. Those of you who can manage to separate politics and hysterics, I applaud you, but I ain't there yet, myself. :-D My new blog won't actually start posting until the 1st, but I'll definitely let y'all know as soon's I have it fully operational, hehe.

Before I manage to stay completely off topic, I would like to also add my kudos to the many already prior to the wonderful latest blog post. This story was extremely moving and did much to help in dissuading the rancor eating away at the edges of my soul these past few weeks.

I don't know if you tracked the link back to the home page or not but I suspect you as I did to see where this cat was comin from. He didn't back up anything else on his pages like he did with his investigation of the 33 degree stuff and most of it was boring or over the top or both. Jas has posted 33 material on almost every page of FSHOD. I have studied numerology for decades and always preferred the Holy Tetractkys of Pythagoras being Tet=4; ract=6; keys=10. The problem with Pythagoras is that he never wrote anything down and what we have of his work is much like Jesus Christ which are "reports" of what he said but no actual writing of what he had to say. Other writers have interpreted Pythagoras and his numerology in substantially different ways. I chalk that up as dininfo.
What I am hearing though, is that there are 120 major corporations in the U.S. that are being investigated for ENRON like activity where "all" of the officers in the corporation from CEO to COO to the personnel managers have colluded to defraud the shareholders. The example being used is where a CEO that has been in the job for (lets say 6 months) pulls in a bonus check from the corporation of 27 million dollars.
It wasn't always like that Sunking but then, "The Song Remains the Same".
As far as Masons or for that matter their fixation with "33", I'm not inclined to place any faith in ley lines of evil. Even if it exists, it leaves lots of room for good.

Finally getting all caught up and I just wanted to mention that I really enjoyed your comparison pics of Bruce Lee's school logo and the vibrating matter. :-D
Your recent discussions of sound waves, frequencies and vibratory resonances reminded me of a book I read a few years back. I dunno if 'yer familiar, but it may also shed some light on some of the vibrational issues you mentioned having a hard time coalescing.
The book is The Holographic Universe by Michael Talbot. You can find a really good synopsis right here which I highly recommend to everyone as the Holographic Paradigm incorporates, and offers rational explanation for, practically everything we discuss here. Here's a teaser:
"Researchers have discovered, for instance, that our visual systems are sensitive to sound frequencies, that our sense of smell is in part dependent on what are now called "cosmic frequencies", and that even the cells in our bodies are sensitive to a broad range of frequencies. Darkwood.. Thanx for the links. The hologram descriptor is not far from my experience particularily when you recognize Time and the little bit of Space that we are apparently here to experience as the proverbial drop in the bucket. A couple of thousand years backward or forward could be the same drop but it is a drop and a light flickering in the deep of spacetime. Regardless of which dimension we exist, the parameters (the bucket) contain (matrix) the ineffable (your art and your science) which of course is expressed in hope and despair. Holograms don't "know" they are holograms.

Actually it makes it REALER for me! I think it's the other way round. I was caught in a Matrix (like the film) of cold,

Art Bell. 2nd nite, I think, back home from Phillipines, broadcasting from his home base in Pahrump. He got a call from a '911 truther', and I got an 'aha'.
I used to wonder if he had sold out or been intimidated into denying the 911 scam. Now I think maybe neither of those are the case.
I saw a clip of David Lynch being interviewed in europe. He was pointing to the 911 scam, but when the interviewer asked about US govt involvement, he said, shaking his head; "its too big. its too big", it is very difficult for people to accept that. In other words, he saw the scam, yet he could not go to where it took him.
Same for Art Bell, maybe.
In a 911 'truth' video, a man speaking before a crowd of New Yorkers about tower detonations etc faced some people who had lost family on 911. It was early in the growing 911 truth movement. The horror was still very fresh.
He was making his points, and questioning the credibility gaps in the 911 commission report, Essentially, he refuted the official story.
Some in the crowd became unglued, screaming insults at him. One guy got calm enough to confront him loudly: "Did you lose anyone on 911 ?" I saw that they just could not rationally hear him because of their pain and anger, and here he is telling them they were duped !
They wanted his head on a stick. People cannot face the truth. (We knew that)
Art Bell's caller essentially challenged Art to host Alex Jones and/or Jim Marrs for a 911 show. Art went back and forth a bit, then he spilled it. Art said it would tear his heart out to learn the govt was involved, and that he could not stay in America if so etc etc.
So I think Art Bell is torn, and of course so are millions of others who know its there but just cannot bring themselves to look at what it means.
Anyhow, he did not cut the caller off. I am sure the call moved him a bit.
If he came around....he has how many million devoted fans that are delighted to have him 'home'...that just might make a difference

Have had my nose deep in a Tungsten T2(handheld pda) trying to tweak the Palm OS to a new interface called "Zlauncher" for my brother. What a project. argh! should of taken a mere few hours and instead has challenged me for a week. Trivial I know, but alas, an effort to help out my bro who works the in a hospital. A little gift for him, after he saw my Treo650 rock'in with an impressive mix of Zlauncher themes(skins). After a great buffet of aggravation, trying to set up a 2Gig SD memory card, I just now have discovered, deep in a forum, that it can't handle it, only up to a 1Gig. Having just about mentally lost it more than a few times this week, I am slightly relieved, to have resolved this weird entanglement. and exhaling...

A new edition from 2006(orig. 2000).
Its a thoroughly good read so far, connecting some dots. Anybody read this already? Eric?
I've heard others mention this Superwave apocoliptic premise but the Pulsar-communications nodes and markers for a much larger extra terrestrial galactic community, has my thoughts really flying now. Very academically presented and well considered.

Dat was me ION.. I read it early 2006, it's a GREAT read for sure, and presents a very real scenario. I sent ya that way awhile back as you were really gettin into the L points.. Thought you'd like it!! The pulsars placement/locations are so accurate as to defy any sort of 'randomness'..
I have all his books.. and all are extremely well done.. and rather difficult to ignore. not necessarily an easy read though.. need to really think and follow his science & logic etc.. deep stuff.. but well worth it though.

First it was CNN last night with whatshitsname and now CTV reporting a UFO. Supposedly something that was all lit up and headed due up over an airport. Thankfully FAA has corrected the misapprobations of the public and has indicated that it was a weather related phenom. Whew!!!!!
What i can't understand is that this story is relatively old as far a news cycles are concerned. Why bring this story out on New Years Day of all times????

It's prolly a good way to cover up the length of time it took to pursue the murders on Danziger Bridge which just happened to be videotaped by NBC and aired on CTV this morning. That story took 16 months to come out. Four N.O. policemen charged with murder when it was discovered that the so called assailants on the bridge had at least 5 bullets in the back and was mentally retarded.

ericswan: Interestingly, the UFO story even made SlashDot, of all things, which is decidedly NOT the usual fare, there. Apparently, much of the hoopla has to do with France's decision to it's entire archive of UFO sightings and similar phenomena online. I, for one, hope they actually follow through as that should be an intriguing read.

Oh, it gets better, friend. I heard on NPR this morning about a government contracter getting busted for dumping "irradiated water" directly into the Bear Creek watershed area of the DOE reservation in Oak Ridge (although damned if I can find anything about that online now). What is really bizarre about it, though, is that the dumping supposedly took place as recently as 2002, yet that particular area has been directly monitored by the EPA since 1991.
Considering that, I am curious as to:
1.) How the dumping could even have taken place considering how closely watched the area is supposed to have been.
2.) Why did it take 4 years or so to finally take anyone to task about it?
Sadly, this really isn't all that surprising among those of us who have lived our whole lives around here. These kinds of stories have been the stuff of local lore since I can remember.

The photo is a composite,with colors assigned to specific nanometer wavelenghts. In other words (or other worlds) false colour.

I listened to Art Bell and Whitley the other night about the weather and climate change, and also have been reading here and there in the papers about NASA and their take on it all, and the head of NOAA's hurricane dept resigning over no one taking his views seriously. In all this discussions and articles NO ONE has addressed weather manipulation or HAARP and their experiments with the ionisphere. No one mentions the radar anomolies or anything else except that it's all related to global warming.Can't these things have an effect or is wx manipulation such a hands off military exercise that nobody is supposed to talk about.

Is there any website that tracks the current El Nino. Whitley says it is behaving exactly opposite to what was ecpected.
I'm thinking that what they are NOT talking about is more important than what they ARE.

It started out here a beautiful clear day. Not a cloud in the sky...until. Yeah, more CTs and that milky overcast. The heatwave continues though. I wonder sometimes if global warming is being used as a cover for what our gov't and others are doing with weather experimentation. If you go to Scott Stevens site, he shows that the planes being used are not commercial or marked military. So who's are they? Maybe an arm of blk ops? Who's paying? Who's making the spray? Somebody's making big bucks from this for sure. And that is what most of this all comes down to. Greed for the money...
and btw I find your posts interesting. I especially find your posts on Prozac interesting. My ex has a long history with anti-depressants, and other drugs which really ruined her life. Thanks for the insights.

The local wx radio (NOAA) gives synopsis of the weather everyday including the records for the date. The record highs for here are in the 60's and ocurred in the early to mid 1900's for the last several dates. The lows have been all over the place from the early 1900's to the 1990's. I tend to think it's cyclical mysself. I remember reading somewhere that the climate in the northern hemisphere was much warmer in the middle ages; 1300's- 1500's. It would make sense if you think that people with no idea of what was over the horizon took off west to see what was there. Most of the exploration was toward Greenland, and Iceland. The norseman had settlements in Greenland at that time and eventually worked west to North America. How cold could it have been if they named it Greenland and they called the parts of Canada they landed at Vinland?
The reason NOAA gives for the warmth on the East Coast is that the Jet Stream is farther north than normal. That blocks cold air out of Canada from getting south.That explains short term patterns. What of the longer term? This pattern has gone too long for a meandering of the Jet.
If the wx manipulators are playing with the jet stream.....???
I still think that most of what we are seeing has to do with plain old greed. There always seems to be money at the bottom of it all.
Some of this has backfired though. Imagine how much oil and gas is just sitting somewhere. Heating oil sales are down 20% here in the NE. Awww...too bad

I agree completely. My take on the warm weather "manipulation" theory is that if they keep the winter warm it keeps oil prices lower and since W is in enough hot water the last thing he needs is to have gas prices sky rocket and really piss off the people...
that's my thought-or one of them. I do think it's cyclical-but perhaps the manipulation just helps accelerate the cycle???
It's hard to judge down here b/c winters are mild anyway. 70's aren't that unusual-but i have to admit that warm weather in winter makes me cranky anyway-maybe its b/c no matter what it will always feel abnormal to me to be hot in January considering my early childhood was spent in both Canada and Minnesota. It seems strange to me that we never have any NFL playoff games in blinding snowstorms anymore. And not just because many play in arenas now-but some still have out side fields and I have only seen one game this year when it snowed and that was in freaking SEATTLE (???!!!)

I'm seeing the same 3 jets on their return trip flying north to south toward Washington state but the HAARP sig is not in the white stuff. It's like they turn it off and on and don't particularily like their pics being taken. Anyway, Stevens has suggested that HAARP is looking for "holes" in the cloud that may indicate the presence of "the other guys" working their what have you being cloaked with who knows what tech. Stevens won't come out and say aliens but Russians or maybe God is in the holes. Tried to post to my blogs this morning. Apparently, google is paying attention. Wasting my time at every turn.

With rising ocean temperatures, methane is increasingly escaping from deep ocean floors. Methane is also 21 more times capable of trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.

You got Uriel's Machine? Good book. Do enjoy, I found it very informative and it connected a lot of dots for me. This Christmas I had received "Decoding the Message of the Pulsars' 2006 edition by Paul LaViolette, which I may have mentioned before, but the one I am really enjoying right now is a discount book I bought for like $12.
Its called CROP CIRCLES by Steve and Karen Alexander. Hardbound it has some fantastic large colour arial shots of the real crop circles(designs). A real feast for the eyes, many of the images are from Britain, but they do note a few of the ones from Canada and the U.S. Its clever in that the book takes one progressively through sacred geometry and number tied in to the patterns that have appeared.
In the book stuff of Christmas, I had a further quirky event when I was at a Salvation Army Store with a friend who likes to hunt for cool deals and I caught a book that "literally" fell off the shelf, named "Solar Flare" by Burkett for 99cents. Fictional book or not, I am paying attention. :O ...and looking forward to reading it now.
From Pulsars to Superwaves to Crop Circles to Solar Flares, I feel like we are being informed in the quirkiest of different ways, we just have to have the eyes open to notice the stream of truth.

In reference to the earlier statements about how Jehovah was seeming more like a serial killer than a benevolent God, I had been saying just exactly that for years. Why the personality change between old and new testaments? Why so directly involved to the point of micromanaging in the Old Testament and more remote in the New? When you consider the descriptions in the Old Testament that clearly read like the landings of spacecraft and prophets have what amounts to "first contact" with space travellers, why does the wrathful God of the Old Testament even have to be the very same being in the New?
Of course, Arthur C.Clarke famously said that advanced enough technology would look like magic to more primitive people. How much more does it take to look like God? And if God is ET, where is God now?
When I think about this, I end up at Sitchen. A reading of Sitchen and the Old Testament together might be interesting to look for connections. I can't reconcile how a "loving God" can also be the same being who personally kills individuals or directs others to slaughter entire populations, but I can see someone wielding a lot of technological power posing as God and causing a lot of chaos for their own purposes. If such a person is either long lived naturally or has the technological means to extend their lifespan then ancient ambitions may yet still be in play.
Yet, that part of it makes no sense. If you're that advanced technologically then why not have at it and take what you want and be done with it? Why do you need to involve us primitive humans? Or the question once posed by James T. Kirk: Why does God need a starship?
The whole thing is a mess. I think we are kept "down on the farm" as I think RCH called it to keep from answering these questions. Getting off this planet would answer the questions and we might find out why Jehovah was such a violent chap back in the day. Worse, we might yet encounter him or his buddies and be woefully outmatched.
Or,we might find only the ruins of Jehovah's power structure, and not only does it cause religion to fall apart but also the whole command and control structure of the last 2000 years. I can't imagine someone so inclined to indulge in such homicidal tendencies would not eventually self destruct. And that hardly makes such a being God.
I have no idea if that made any sense, but there it is. Probably a well deserved peckerhead award for that mess.

Priority list: save the planet
“We’re looking seriously at this,” said Chris McKay, deputy scientist in the Constellation science office at JSC. He is stationed at NASA’s Ames Research Center located in California’s Silicon Valley, part of a study team there delving into the scientific output from a piloted asteroid flight.
NASA Ames officials are looking at how the Orion exploration vehicle could be used for a human mission to an NEO, McKay explained. The study is only about halfway complete but initial results look to be positive, he said.
McKay said that the main question seems to be finding a NEO that allows for missions that are not too long.
Once on station at an asteroid, crewmembers might release a probe to crash onto the asteroid as they watch from a distance, McKay added.
“A human mission to a NEO, and the associated robotic probes, will return a lot of science and this will be valuable. But as a lifelong resident of Earth…I think that being prepared to save the planet ranks higher on the priority list than insights into the formation of the solar system. But we can do both.”
Asteroids: ready for them or not?
NASA attraction to asteroids comes from the top.
Space agency head, Mike Griffin, told an audience recently at NASA’s Langley Research Center that “our species hasn’t been around long enough to have experienced a cataclysmic extinction event. But they will occur again, whether we are ready for them or not.”
So, in the end, Griffin said, “human expansion into our solar system is fundamentally about the survival of the species, about ensuring better odds for our survival through the promulgation of our species.”
“But one assumption that I know will be justified is that the Moon, the near-Earth asteroids, and the rest of the solar system contain the resources that will take mankind to the next level of civilization and prosperity. I don’t know when it will occur or who will do it, but it will happen. I hope that it will be soon, and that we will be the agents of this great endeavor,” Griffin explained.
Spread the human seed
NASA’s upswing in asteroid interest is good news, reported William Burrows, author of The Survival Imperative – Using Space to Protect Earth (Forge, 2006). He’s also a professor of journalism at New York University.
“The cliché that we should land on one or more asteroids ‘because they are there’ certainly applies, since the need to explore is an ancient and deeply-held human trait,” Burrows explained. “But more pragmatically, knowledge is never wasted, so there will be things to learn from being on asteroids that we cannot anticipate but that can only be beneficial,” he said.
Burrows said that resource mining in the distant future is part of that learning process.
“But far more important, it will teach us valuable things about them and the need to spread the human seed, not only for adventure, but as a hedge against a civilization-threatening catastrophe on the home planet,” Burrows said.
Planetary Defense
In a few months time, NASA is set to co-sponsor the 2007 Planetary Defense Conference to be convened in Washington, D.C.
The March meeting is organized to capture the state-of-the-art in terms of protecting Earth from NEOs, said William Ailor of The Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo, California and general chair of meeting.
“There are a lot of unknowns relative to asteroids,” Ailor said, like how they are put together – a key piece of information required in order to deflect any Earth-threatening space rock. “One of the issues that you have is that there’s probably some variability asteroid to asteroid.”
Ailor said that piloted flight to an asteroid would yield additional detail on dealing with a future hostile object. However, the real challenge, he said, is that no one country is going to have the wherewithal to cover every aspect of the problem.
So the question is, Ailor added, just how does the world community get together to incrementally add information about these objects and offer mitigation ideas?
“I think it’s becoming more of a credible issue now. People recognize that these kinds of events can happen…and we actually have the capability now to do something about it,” Ailor suggested. “The [space] community—and I would include the political community—is beginning to take this more seriously. We’ve progressed a long way over the last few years…but we still have a long way to go,” he said.

A Bright Comet Is Coming
If you watch the morning or evening sky these days and have a clear view of the horizon, you will be able to spot a bright object with a prominent tail.
Instructions for viewing the comet in the morning from Spaceweather.com:
At dawn, go outside and face east
Using binoculars, scan the horizon
The comet is located just south of due east

That object is comet C/2006 P1 (Comet McNaught). It was discovered on August 7th, 2006 by the hugely successful comet discoverer Rob McNaught.
At time of discovery, the comet was a very faint object, but the predicted perihelion distance (closest distance to the sun) of just 0.17 astronomical units (the average distance between the Earth and sun, about 150 million kilometers) indicated that the object has the potential to become very bright indeed.
Nobody really knows just what this comet will look like at its closest point to the sun and that is where SOHO comes in! The LASCO instrument aboard SOHO has the ability to watch comets as they get extremely close to the sun.
Fortunately for us, C/2006 P1 is going to pass right through the LASCO C3 field of view in less than a weeks' time! As soon as SOHO's cameras capture the comet, we will post images and further information to the SOHO website. In the meantime, you may enjoy looking at some photographs and checking out the links below for further information.
The image to the left shows the expected track of the comet through SOHO's coronagraph LASCO C3. The comet will appear in the field of view of C3 at around 10:00 UT (05:00 EDT) on January 12th (a few hours before perihelion) in the upper-left of the images and travel almost vertically down, exiting C3's field of view in the lower left at roughly 03:00 UT on January 16th.
Comet McNaught skymap Recent estimates of the comet's maximal brightness have ranged widely from magnitude +2.1 (about as bright as Polaris, the North Star) to a super-bright -8.8 (about 40 times brighter than Venus)! The lower the magnitude number, the brighter the object. The brightest stars in the sky are categorized as zero or first magnitude. Negative magnitudes are reserved for the most brilliant objects: the brightest star is Sirius (-1.4); the full Moon is -12.7; the Sun is -26.7.
Current estimates put comet McNaught at magnitude 0 to -1, and it is still brightening. It could be -2 or -3 by the time it reaches LASCO's field of view. This means it will be brighter than comet NEAT or comet 96P/Machholz. In other words, this could be the brightest and most spectacular comet that SOHO has ever seen!

Or to put another way, I'm a middle aged person who should go get bifocals, but I just flip my glasses up and down like a welder's helmet visor. When I am outdoors, taking my glasses off causes the individual trees to turn into a forest and the whole context of what is in front of me changes. The forest connects the dots of the trees. Your post about the "priority list" is an excellent example. For the official question to even be posed means there is something out there. I could be wrong, I often am, but I think that someone in this community is aware of an object heading this way and has thus far kept it out of public awareness. The statement even acknowledging the possibility of the need to defend against NEOs to me is admission that we will have to defend Earth against one sooner rather than later. The idea of sending a manned crew to an NEO is practically right out of the movie Armageddon.
It may end up that the Big Disclosure isn't aliens (though it should be) but a near earth object that this time probably won't miss us. if that's the case, The Shrub will get us all killed in a different way by the billions wasted on Iraq that should have gone to planetary defence. Instead of creating a new Reichstag fire or a Pearl Harbour to "rally" around, what about uniting to save the whole damn planet from extinction? "Terrorism" may pale against a direct asteroid hit.
As far back as the 1930's when the book "When Worlds Collide" and the later movie there have been "fictional" warnings of impending planetary collision with an object of sufficient mass to ruin the Earth if not completely destroy it. The 1970's had the movie "Asteroid" if I remember the title correctly. It was one of those movies created at the end of the whole "disaster movie" cycle. Then we end up with Armageddon and the other movie whose title escapes me the one with Morgan Freeman and we see this idea brought before our consciousness again.
Is this "pop culture"? Or is this a form of "data" that someone like Goro Adachi would plug into his matrix for analysis and projection? Or just something else altogether different?
Goro is actively using the themes from Armageddon and Deep Impact in his analyses, where there is the theme of a 'communication' being given to us.
I think that if you go back thru a few years of nres, that we can see where there has been an active move to create underground shelters, not necessarily for a nuclear attack, but able to withstand something worse. Back on Drydock (I think) I linked to some HAAARP budget resource data...remarkable that in the same budget was request for science and equipment meant that could be used to find Saddam's in underground bunkers, peer into Iranian nuke facilities, to perhaps find oil deposits, or maybe suitable areas for shelter placement. Or at least that is how I read that. Recall the info about the Denver Airport? A place built behind the cover of the Rockies might be a good spot to hide from a tidal wave of Heston-esque proportions. (Which one of y'all used to crack me up invoking Charleston Heston with regards to tornadoes? LOL!) Plus all the other underground areas we've discussed come to mind.
This also came to mind the other day whilst reading Uriel's Machine. The discussion about Skara Brae and other locations made mention of the stone stucture's created by megalithic peoples being able to withstand a 'Deep Impact' induced tidal wave or Flood...that maybe these fdolk had a greater memory of such a disaster pre-7000BC and the knowledge that another was coming in the circa 3140BC timeframe.
So much of what I've read these past 20 years points to this type of recurring disaster...and 'we' are just too damned 'modern' to see the trees that make up that bi-focular forest! ;)

There is definately a quiet underlying core premise that they are working from.
Perhaps even beyond my earlier notions about simply species sustainability.
They already know something, and are quietly spending grand sums of money and putting forth some serious good minds to these projects.
I was onto a thought recently about what they actually learned about the source 'object' that generates the annual Geminids Meteor shower. It wasn't comet at all, as it usually is, it was in fact a very strange 'asteroid' that oddly had a tail called 3200 Phaethon.
(now its tail is gone and it appears quiet)
Key: Phaethon's most remarkable distinction is that it approaches the Sun closer than ANY other numbered asteroid. Hint: it is also a clever slight spelling change from "Phaeton" which tells quite a mythological story about Zeus and family. check Wikipedia.
I've got a lot of pondering still to do here but here is a few bits that sprung up, that will surprise us as to the dot connection back to our great TEMPEL1 story with Hoagland.
Asteroids.
The first was 3200Phaethon(a Dormant/Extinct), the second object was 9P/Tempel 1(typical periodic) in the proposal.
For the second objective the impact should attempt to induce cometary activity in a dormant comet by penetration of the mantle. HELLO!!!!?????(iontruo2)

The primary intention is to penetrate the mantle and stimulate cometary activity
3200 Phaethon was to use a dumb aluminum impactor...delivered at 33km/sec. Time for observation from the flyby bus is relatively short(7 min.) (iontruo2-->33km per sec HMMMM?!)
Temple1 allowed for a much longer observing time.
The presently understood properties of cometary materials indicate that deep and laterally extensive excavations into cometary surfaces are possible at modest cost using the kinetic energy in a simple impactor delivered at hypersonic velocity from a flyby spacecraft. The excavation depths (‚â• 20 m) and diameters (‚â• 100 m) that are possible are consistent with the expected scales of vertical modification through processes induced by solar insolation and the background cosmic radiation. Investigation of exposed materials in the crater and induced cometary phenomena should yield information on the state, composition, and distribution of subsurface materials and constrain models of the evolutionary and transport processes that are expected to occur in the surface layers.
As a result it should be possible to quantitatively gauge the degree of modification with depth and possibly locate the levels at which effectively pristine material resides. When applied to dormant comets, excavation to at least 20 meters may easily be sufficient to puncture the mantle to relatively fresh material below.
For example, some models of mantle buildup indicate that a thin ( 1 m) sintered, dust mantle may be sufficient to choke off cometary activity (cf. Keller, 1990).
iontruo2--So, they ended up choosing TEMPEL1, but I am starting to see little elements of a bigger picture and effort here. Not quite sure yet but I have some other material to sort and consider.
Test for TEMPEL1 was "For the second objective the impact should attempt to induce cometary activity in a dormant comet by penetration of the mantle."
...and in that whole article I had copied, they finished it with this--"dust mantle may be sufficient to choke off cometary activity (cf. Keller, 1990)"

They are saying that recently discovered asteroid 2005 UD is a fragment of 32 Phaethon. Possibly the split nucleus of it.
Other strange little nudges I have been getting took me to a few premises, where they are considering these two to be the remnant of the Planet that was positioned between Mars and Jupiter.
I don't have any opinion at this time as to that, but I do think they have a very clear idea of what has occurred in the lineage of the past in our local space.
A few other 'fragments" :) of stuff that correlate with Sitchen, a lightening bolt of Zeus/Phaeton like story and a planetoid at (you guessed it!) Lagrange Point L5, that grew too big and lost stability--->sliding over and 'bumping' into old Earth. (Moon formation info)

One other piece I had read that was a formal science document for those of their field, refered very clearly to the working understanding that asteroids are the "feed stock" of the universe. who moved on and was replaced by a red horse named Sophie, just prior Christmas last year when Sword was telling his Cristmas story about The Three Wise Men.
Following their swift trip by horseback(not camel) they eventually were buried on the Hill of Vaws, and a shrine was erected to the Patron Saint of Wisdom named Sophia.
So, if we are simply being 'informed' by these symbologies that can arise, as in my examples here, or perhaps other 'levels' of existence are trying to help us to awaken to a larger consciousness or understanding that includes some of these details, I don't really know. It would seem almost trivial frankly if it was JUST to tell us there is species threat because hey, people are dying off all the time, all the time, and at other times in big numbers by various other means. War, quakes tsunamis its all here , already.
I feel its all more than just an alarm or warning. Its the first tricklings of a bigger truth that will show us outright in time that we are not alone, that help is in our midst and that this human experience is not ultimately WHAT you are.
I have more glee at discovery, than any concern for myself or the balance of humanity. It's been awhile since I thought about it, but I do remember your posts about HAARP and the underground facilities. As an artist, I can't help wondering at times where my inspiration for paintings come from. Is it from within me, or is it something external. When I was a teenager in the 1970's, I was fascinated by two subjects in my drawings of the time. One was fending off alien attack in the mid to late 1940's and the other was a collision with Earth. For some reason I'd do these pictures of P-51-D Mustangs fighting off classic flying saucers near the Empire State Building. In the collision with Earth pictures, I'd draw a view of the Earth showing how the North and South American continents were affected. I get a chill thinking that those drawings actually resemble those after the disaster maps that have been discussed here in the past. Yet, my drawings were based on descriptions in the text of When Worlds Collide since I was pretty much illustrating that story. What I consider external is the fascination with the end of our civilisation.
Iontruo2, your references to horses and asteroids made the image of The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse being asteroids approaching Earth come to mind. This brings a chill.
Something tells me that I would not be one of those people to be selected to live in an underground shelter should we get hit. As much as I would hate to see the world get blown away and all the people I love and all the innocent creatures of the Earth blown away with it, there is at least comfort in knowing that we will all cross over as spirits to somewhere much safer. I've had some experiences in my life that have really affirmed this for me and takes the sting of such an event away somewhat.
Frankly, I wish that large scale spiritual enlightenment could come without such cataclysm attached to it. If it does, there is a particular loved one in my life who promised me that she would come for me when it was time to cross over. I hope it's not under the circumstances we're discussing.

At least a dozen United Airlines employees reported seeing a flying saucer hovering over Chicago’s O’Hare Airport on Nov. 7, and they’re upset that no one—from the FAA to their own company—is taking them seriously. One of the tower controllers summed up the generally disingenuous response to the sighting: “To fly 7 million light-years to O’Hare and then have to turn around and go home because your gate was occupied is simply unacceptable.”

A flying saucerlike object hovered low over O’Hare International Airport for several minutes before bolting through thick clouds with such intense energy that it left an eerie hole in overcast skies, said some United Airlines employees who observed the phenomenon.
Was it an alien spaceship? A weather balloon lost in the airspace over the world’s second-busiest airport? A top-secret military craft? Or simply a reflection from lights that played a trick on the eyes?
Officials at United professed no knowledge of the Nov. 7 event—which was reported to the airline by as many as a dozen of its own workers—when the Tribune started asking questions recently. But the Federal Aviation Administration said its air traffic control tower at O’Hare did receive a call from a United supervisor asking if controllers had spotted a mysterious elliptical-shaped craft sitting motionless over Concourse C of the United terminal.
No controllers saw the object, and a preliminary check of radar found nothing out of the ordinary, FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said.
The FAA is not conducting a further investigation, Cory said. The theory is the sighting was caused by a “weather phenomenon,” she said.
