Alas, Babylon's Nightfall

Over the past two weeks there has been some discussion about survival (be it post-natural disaster or post-apocalyptic) and threats from outer space such as the currently-popular comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 or the 'mythic' Planet Niburu. Perhaps synchronistically, I've just finished reading two selections from the public library that have a direct bearing on the topics under discussion.
The first book (which I consumed in one gulp last Friday and Saturday) was the classic Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank. I've mentioned this book more than once and commend it as a quick, interesting and thought-provoking read. Written in 1959 it deals with the changes and challenges faced by a north-Central Florida man, his family and friends and town, in a post-nuclear war setting. Admittedly the book is dated and a product of it's era. Yet it contains references that are seemingly timeless: the propensity of 'the peepul' to elect to ofice the most greedy, corrupt and inneffectual person's possible; political in-fighting in Washington, DC; problematic foriegn relations; tensions in the Middle East...even riots in Paris! How little things change.
More importantly, Alas, Babylon is a practical sociological and psychological study of what can happen when people of our modern age are thrust back into the 19th century in the blink of an eye! As a side note, Wikipedia says "Alas, Babylon is considered by some to be an inspiration for John Titor's claim of time travel and description of nuclear war in the 2010s"
The 2nd book I bring to your attention is Nightfall by Issav Asimov and Robert Silverberg. An archealogical dig on a region of the planet Kalgash reveals that every 2049 years, a cataclysm of fire wipes out civilization, leaving only few survivors. This encourages and emboldens the followers of a religion whose Book of Revealation warns of just such a fate for non-believers. At the same time, a group of universtity astronomers discovers a problem with their Theory of Unified Gravitation, which leads to a further discovery that there is an unseen, due to the spectrum, planet (called Kalgash Two) that returns on a highly elliptical orbit...every 2049 years! (Sound familiar, anybody?)
The problem with this lies in the fact that Planet Kalgash has six suns and never knows total darkness. The astronomers determine that shows up during a time when 5 suns are one side of Kalgash and the smallest sun, alone on the other hemisphere, is eclipsed by Kalgash Two, resulting in a total 'nightfall'. No big deal, eh? Well, it so happens that the inhabitants of this planet, never having known 'nightfall' or total darkness except for brief periods, in general lose their minds either completely of for at least a short time, after it is reveled to them that there are 'stars' and other suns, in fact an entire universe they had no idea existed. The level of psychosis and panic is so widespread that fires are lit to bring light and, thus, the whole world destroyed by fire! Quite 'Brookings'-like, eh?
By now you're wondering "Why the book report, Sunking?". Well, we've discussed what supplies to buy, the best kind of knife to have handy, and what Army Field Manuals to commit to memory. But the one thing we haven't touched on is the post-disaster mind. And whilst these books are somewhat romantic fantasies, they both point out some basic facts we should all remember, just in case some of us go on an unexpected swim this week...
Some people, no matter their level of intelligence of standing in the community, will not be able to handle the abrupt change in the reality of a post-disaster/apocalyse world or some unexpected, universe-shattering disclosure. These people will go mad or commit suicide. Some people will attempt to gain riches that have no worth in the new reality, or try to usurp power over people and resources via sinister means and for sinister purposes. These people will have to be guarded against and fought and, perhaps, eliminated, preferably via what passes for a legal execution. There will be some people in between. But those of us, the Creator willing, that have open, enlightened minds and willing hearts and able-hands, will be required to stand forthrightly and work with others, with their consent and authority, to reestablish civil order and society, methods of sanitation and of providing food and medical care and schools and all the things that separate us, homo sapiens, from the animal and the common human brigand.
So, the weapons and supplies and foodstuffs we store may not make the difference. It will be the 'stuff' of our minds, out thoughts and ideals, that will grant us survival and restore humanity!
Will we be worthy to the task? Will we brave the storm?

Have to admit that after reading your "book report" I do recall reading Nightfall. I think it was in the late 80's or maybe earlier.

Well, if we all go deep sea swimming on our way to see da Lord none of this will ever have mattered. On the other hand, surviving a post apocalyptic disaster is another story. I would like to think that your idea of the open minded coming together and getting civilization back on it's feet appropriate.
It's kind of hard to even imagine what a PA society would be like. I only see the movie pix going through my head. I am convinced though, it would be pretty horrible. Unless, there was intervention from outside our world or something. That would be the only light I could think of. Even a big rock dropping in the Atlantic could generate an apocolypse.
If the rock does drop this week, I will see you all on the other side. In the meantime, business as usual.

Your blog reminded of a book from the 30's o 40's I had/read years ago, called "When Worlds Collide".
That book was the oiginal source material, though heavily modified, behind the more recent "Deep Impact" movie.
The book revolves around the lives of a few people caught up in the chaos of planetary destruction, caused by two
interloping planets headed towards earth. One of the rogue planets collides with earth, destroying it.
Selected individuals escape the destruction on a rocket of classic 'shem' design/description and land on the second
rogue planet which has taken an earthly orbit to restart the species/civilization.
That book reached out and 'touched' me. Oddly, many older sci-fi pieces did that as well. Couple all that stuff up with
some Donnelly, Velikovski and etc...

It is now thought that this basis is almost certainly the WATER contained in the bio-body, in the physical components of the nerve systems, and the physical part of the brain.

One of the best guesses, yet to be established, is that the vibrations of the water molecules link together throughout the entire bio-body and form the equivalent of radar or sonar antennae.

I have been giving this some thought actually and your premise behind it is a good one. In actual practice is where I see the difficulty. Why would I allow you to babysit my kid or trade goods when in a cashless society barter and the black market are going to be illegal. The overriding idea of working with and knowing your neighbor is the key but for it to be successful, one has to open the door, walk out and meet the neighbors.

If you are the recipient of one of things, you give up credits. If your apple tree produces 20 bushels of apples and you can only consume one bushel, why not put the rest of them into the system and generate 19 credits.
You may be wondering how this could be bigger than Microsoft? The system and the software would be the "property" of the board of directors.
I can see where you may not trust all of your neighbours but the system is controlled by the users. Its a database in real time. Hard to imagine how that could affect your choices in a negative way. I think the directors of this system would need to put in 10 percent of their time to accumulate the credits necessary and hopefully, most of them would be kids.

No, not nearly that affluent to send 'em to FSU or Auburn. I wish! She's going to FCCJ, the local equivalent to PJC. The middle daughter graduated from FCCJ 2 weeks ago with her AA. She'll be going to UNF (a la UWF). The oldest will graduate from UWF this December. I need her to hurry...I cannot afford to finance 3 college educashuns at one time...I had counted on their being 3-4 years apart in age to offer some relief, but the oldest has dragged her heels.
Next year, the oldest is going to India to some Yoga 'anshram' (did I get that right?). She's majoring in International Studies, but is also teaching a yoga class ( a 'for credit' class the university offers) and, as part of that deal, recently got certified. She teaches class at the YMCA and that community center of 12th Ave, can't remember the name. So this fine college education may be for naught, since she seems devoted to yoga.
For all this yoga, tho, she seems to have an abnormal stress level (Normal for GRITS, but frequently at Pain-in-the-ass level for Dad!).

I live not too far from
where many of the residents in the story live and I've e-mailed back and
forth a few times with Rosalind Peterson who is interviewed for
the story.
Now I have to mention (because one of the silent readers here will roast me
if I don't) that the contrail phenomenon is not being treated accurately
by essentially ALL of the 'chemtrail' sites. His research while between
jobs was exhaustive and we still battle over the chemtrail / contrail issue.
I agree with his research which shows that contrails can behave to the layman
EXACTLY like chemtrails. Contrails during periods of 'supersaturation'
can persist for hours and even days. They become clouds, they stretch from
horizon to horizon. Supersaturation is not defined by humidity, it is
defined by tiny tiny ice crystals and can occur during atmospheric conditions
of relatively low humidity (all chemtrail websites screw this part up by the way
as they stress repeatedly that it is humidity levels that define contrail persistence)
Supersaturation conditions often occur before storm systems / low pressure
thus the spraying before storms phenomenon. Supersaturation
conditions can occur at times other than approaching fronts, so that you
may see skies filled with planes leaving long lasting marks in the sky on
sunny seemingly 'dry' days.
Research done on persistent contrails extends back decades and many
researchers have serious concerns that jet contrails are
effecting the weather. Anyways looking at trails in the sky, many times
commercial traffic (and man has it grown!) are also leaving streaks that
last for hours and in some cases DAYS. Makes the issue a lot more cloudy
and it doesn't help that chemtrail proponents are not treating this issue
with any acumen at all. It certainly makes them all look suspect.
Thanks for letting me spew there and I still am looking up and seeing
differences in trailing that makes me think there is a non known spray
program.

Speaking of chemtrails, had some going on yesterday. They was laying down some fatties from what looked like some large planes. The trails stayed tight, meaning they didn't spread out. Then the trails would dissipate. Somewhat different than the usual tendencies of sprayers. My 2 cents.

Likewise the Today Show interview with Jon Hofmeister, Prez of Shell Oil vid clip I just watched. Katie then turns that around to make it sound like he said that global warming is scientific fact! Wrong-ooooo, Madame Leg-crosser! Hof said 'in the perception'. And then the statements he makes are 'blatantly' (to ME) addressed soley to the 'perceptions' of the viewer and general user of oil products. A new theory to explain global warming was revealed at a meeting at the
University of Leicester (UK) and is being considered for publication in the journal
"Science First Hand".
The controversial theory has nothing to do with burning fossil fuels and
atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. According to Vladimir Shaidurov of the Russian
Academy of Sciences, the apparent rise in average global temperature recorded
by scientists over the last hundred years or so could be due to atmospheric
changes that are not connected to human emissions of carbon dioxide from the
burning of natural gas and oil. Shaidurov explained how changes in the amount of
ice crystals at high altitude could damage the layer of thin, high altitude
clouds found in the mesosphere that reduce the amount of warming solar radiation
reaching the earth's surface.
Shaidurov has used a detailed analysis of the mean temperature change by year
for the last 140 years and explains that there was a slight decrease in
temperature until the early twentieth century. This flies in the face of current
global warming theories that blame a rise in temperature on rising carbon
dioxide emissions since the start of the industrial revolution. Shaidurov, however,
suggests that the rise, which began between 1906 and 1909, could have had a
very different cause, which he believes was the massive Tunguska Event, which
rocked a remote part of Siberia, northwest of Lake Baikal on the 30th June 1908.
The Tunguska Event, sometimes known as the Tungus Meteorite is thought to
have resulted from an asteroid or comet entering the earth's atmosphere and
exploding. The event released as much energy as fifteen one-megaton atomic bombs.
As well as blasting an enormous amount of dust into the atmosphere, felling 60
million trees over an area of more than 2000 square kilometres. Shaidurov
suggests that this explosion would have caused "considerable stirring of the high
layers of atmosphere and change its structure." Such meteoric disruption was
the trigger for the subsequent rise in global temperatures.
Global warming is thought to be caused by the "greenhouse effect". Energy
from the sun reaches the earth's surface and warms it, without the greenhouse
effect most of this energy is then lost as the heat radiates back into space.
However, the presence of so-called greenhouse gases at high altitude absorb much
of this energy and then radiate a proportion back towards the earth's surface.
Causing temperatures to rise.
Many natural gases and some of those released by conventional power stations,
vehicle and aircraft exhausts act as greenhouse gases. Carbon dioxide,
natural gas, or methane, and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are all potent greenhouse
gases. Carbon dioxide and methane are found naturally in the atmosphere, but it
is the gradual rise in levels of these gases since the industrial revolution,
and in particular the beginning of the twentieth century, that scientists have
blamed for the gradual rise in recorded global temperature. Attempts to
reverse global warming, such as the Kyoto Protocol, have centred on controlling and
even reducing CO2 emissions.
However, the most potent greenhouse gas is water, explains Shaidurov and it
is this compound on which his study focuses. According to Shaidurov, only small
changes in the atmospheric levels of water, in the form of vapour and ice
crystals can contribute to significant changes to the temperature of the earth's
surface, which far outweighs the effects of carbon dioxide and other gases
released by human activities. Just a rise of 1% of water vapour could raise the
global average temperature of Earth's surface more then 4 degrees Celsius.
The role of water vapour in controlling our planet's temperature was hinted
at almost 150 years ago by Irish scientist John Tyndall. Tyndall, who also
provided an explanation as to why the sky is blue, explained the problem: "The
strongest radiant heat absorber, is the most important gas controlling Earth's
temperature. Without water vapour, he wrote, the Earth's surface would be 'held
fast in the iron grip of frost'." Thin clouds at high altitude allow sunlight
to reach the earth's surface, but reflect back radiated heat, acting as an
insulating greenhouse layer.
Water vapour levels are even less within our control than CO2 levels.
According to Andrew E. Dessler of the Texas A & M University writing in 'The Science
and Politics of Global Climate Change', "Human activities do not control all
greenhouse gases, however. The most powerful greenhouse gas in the atmosphere
is water vapour, he says, "Human activities have little direct control over its
atmospheric abundance, which is controlled instead by the worldwide balance
between evaporation from the oceans and precipitation."
As such, Shaidurov has concluded that only an enormous natural phenomenon,
such as an asteroid or comet impact or airburst, could seriously disturb
atmospheric water levels, destroying persistent so-called 'silver', or noctilucent,
clouds composed of ice crystals in the high altitude mesosphere (50 to 85km).
The Tunguska Event was just such an event, and coincides with the period of
time during which global temperatures appear to have been rising the most
steadily - the twentieth century. There are many hypothetical mechanisms of how this
mesosphere catastrophe might have occurred, and future research is needed to
provide a definitive answer.
Professor Vladimir Shaidurov is an expert in Numerical Analysis and
Mathematical Modelling, and the Corresponding member of Russian Academy of Sciences.
For development of multigrid methods he achieved the highest Russian prize in
science (together with Profs Fedorenko and Bachvalov) - the State Prize (2004).
He visited University of Leicester in April 2005.

Some of your comments seem to imply that you've been talking to the mainstream press and that they've been talking about FSHOD... how is it that I doubt this? Remember folks, the reason I created this blog and it's predecessor Drydock, was simply to keep the people of the Enterprise Blog together. I do this not for fame or certainly not for fortune. While it has allowed me a chance to have a forum for my humble writings (Which I consider quite poor, certainly not earthshattering...just the thoughts of a normal guy of my generation....well, slightly abnormal?) and a chance to learn some HTML, this is certainly not meant to be a cult of personality or THE source for The Unknown! I dont know what lofty impressions you have of what FSHOD should be, but rest assured that mine are more humble and genteel, meant to be a place for other slightly abnormal folks like me to get together and feel a sense of society.

There is a camaraderie amongst former military based on shared experience...we all went thru similar training, often in the same locales with the same landmarks (e.g. the water tower at the Orlando Navy Boot Camp called 'the Doorknob to Hell'...hehe), the same routines...and the fact that we know that the other person HAD to have had at least the same degree of grit that you had to get thru it. In an emergency, you could probably expect former military to react is a predictable, good manner. In the advent of a post-disaster/apocalypse scenarion, you might easily find that, as in Alas Babylon, that one or more former mil folks would act to form a militia and responsibly set out to establish order. Hopefully.
For let us not forget 2 things:
1) Some men who "made their living by the rifle" might have decided that THAT is not 'The Way'. Maybe they've seen war, and while knowing that sometimes it must be waged, that there is no glory to war...it just plain sucks. Might not even own a gun.
2) Some men who "made their living by the rifle" are just plain fucked up in the head, perhaps downright psychotic...and they MAY have been that way BEFORE they joined the service. Like cops and mothers, folk in the service are placed on a pedastal of honor that often is not justified, because there are criminal cops, and baby-murdering mothers...and dipshits/morons with uniforms and guns that, and in certain circumstances society would be better off if these individuals were given '2 to da back of da head' and thus reduce the risk to the general populace.
But overall, your average, decent former mil type can be counted on in a crunch.
I say that anybody who every was in the military, who showered in the same shower with 70 guys and ate chow with 70 guys and got punished with 70 guys, is able to know which of those guys will be heroes, which of those guys will just be a good, solid comrade...and which of those guys you wouldn't want to share a foxhole with, for a variety of reasons...one of which would be that he is a complete psycho nut. (Note: I was not referring to YOU there or with item 2 above.)
But face it, there ARE people in the military that do not deserve the title 'human being'.

A article by Phillip caught my eye. He spoke of plasma, nanotechnology, etc. in chemtrails.
He is correct. There is a substance called aerogel*, used by NASA to supposedly collect stardust, etc. What it can also do is hold organisms, etc.. as it is sprayed down from the sky.
It is almost transparent, etc, with somewhat of a milky appearance, or a light-colored chemtrail to be exact. This is what they use while spraying to hold whatever substance or pathogen being applied. It is light as air, so it floats, slowly spreading.. well, you get the picture. Chemicals, etc.. disperse too easily, this nano-substance holds it, while enveloping an area in a snare net.
Monsanto* was the first company to develop aerogel. Aren't they also into genetic engineering?

I recall reading something about this technology, maybe linked
or discussed by bohemia, then came across it again today while
looking up barium and aluminum. There are companies making a barium
and aluminum liquid BTW in a format that seems to match one mentioned in a
specific aerosol patent, but that shouldn't worry anyone, all this won't
be happening till 2019. If anyone viewed the chemtrail story, the professor
there discussing aluminum and barium seems to be saying 2 things. First
he says these compounds are not being deployed, then he says that they
WILL be deployed! Amazing, considering his DOE position, he IS blowing
the whistle! He is saying as much as he is PERMITTED to say. Of course
my interpretation could be wrong ...but I doubt it.
So what I am saying is that it is increasingly appearing that chemtrails

I think truth of the little t variety tends to be extremely manufactured and we all make our truths each and every day.
There is an extremely idealistic side of me that really, really wants to believe there is a big t Truth out there just waiting to be found. The cynicism I have gleaned from experiencing life, however, have left me to think that there is either no such creature or, if it were found, no two people would EVER agree that it is so and therefore would be the same as not existing.
I guess in a lot of ways I'm kind of like Fox Mulder. I WANT to believe, but damned reason and need for proof just keeps getting in the way, hehehe. Fact is, I really don't want to believe as I tend to equate belief with the death of thought and reason. I WANT to KNOW. Hell, believing's easier, IMO.
